GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS October 02, 2002 NAVY PLANES COLLIDE OFF DABOLIM; 6 KILLED: Two Russian made Ilyushin IL-28 naval aircraft of the winged stallions squadron collided outside the Dabolim airport at about 9.45 am on October 1, while participating in the silver jubilee exercise to commemorate their induction into the air wing of the Navy. All 12 navy crew members in the two planes were killed instantly, while the air disaster also claimed the lives of at least four civilians who were on the ground besides injuring 15 others. One aircraft landed just inside the Zuari compound while the second crashed within 100 metres of the MES College and ploughed into a bungalow under completion owned by Sayeed Bismilla, who runs Bismilla Fisheries. (H) POWER SUPPLY DISRUPTED: A part of the wreckage rammed into a high tension electricity tower, snapping off the lines. As a result, power supply to the entire port town of Vasco, including the airport terminus, was shut off. Telephone lines were also disrupted. (H) INQUIRY INSTITUTED: Flag Officer Goa Naval Area and Flag Officer Naval Aviation, Rear Adm SK Damle, said it could be a technical failure or even human error and went on to state that the planes were flying parallel, when their wings got entangled. He said that a board of inquiry has been constituted to identify the exact cause of the incident. (H) FIFTH IN THREE DECADES: Tuesday's tragic mid-air collision of two IL-38 Naval aircrafts is believed to be the fifth such incident to occur in Goa over the last three decades. (H) HOSTILE AUTHORITIES: In keeping with its tradition of discourtesy and hostility towards civilians, the Navy snatched the camera of the Vasco correspondent of "Herald", who was one of the first to reach the site. Journalists, who rushed to the site were given a rude treatment by the Navy personnel. (H) NOT TO AFFECT TOURISM: The air crash, worst Goa has ever seen, will not have any impact on tourism in Goa, according to the president of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa, Charles Bonifacio. (H) NAVAL PLANE TRAGEDY: The tragedy of the type that occurred on Tuesday has again raked up the issue of the safety of the residents of the port town Vasco and its surroundings. Not long ago there was the explosion in the IOC pipeline. Then came the leakage in the naphtha pipeline. And, now the aircraft crash. In fact, today's tragedy should set in motion forces that would eventually help make Vasco a safer place to live in. The entire area covering Vasco, Dabolim, Chicalim and Sancoale are today exposed to various types of hazards on account of the proximity of the defence establishments and industrial units to civilian and residential areas. (H) MANIPAL FINANCE UNDER FIRE: The depositors of Manipal Finance Corporation have rejected the scheme of arrangement proposed by the Corporation for repayment of depositors' money. (GT) TEENAGERS DROWN: Two girlsJyoti Rupal Thaod and Mahadevi RameshRathod hailing from Gadag in Karnataka-- belonging to migrant labour families died due to drowning in a well near Gothanicho Vhall at Carasvado, Mapusa, where they had gone to fetch water, yesterday morning. (GT) CHORAO'S SENIOR CITIZENS: Chorao villagers celebrated "International Year of Elders" by organizing a Walk Event for the elderly people of Chorao on September 29 on the picturesque Chorao island. In all 500 senior citizens, aged 60 years and above, participated in the event which commenced from Vishnudevalaya Temple to Saude Church. (GT) SEEKING SOLUTION: Incensed over the "step-motherly treatment" given to their ward, the residents of ward number 1, part II, under the banner of the Citizens' Rapid Action Committee, have threatened to take out morcha in protest. Non-functioning street lights, improper roads, no gutters and obstruction caused by uncut trees on the roadside are some of the grievances of the hilly ward of Mapusa. (NT) FIRST COMPUTERISED PANCHAYAT: Getting a no-objection certificate for an electricity connection or registering the birth details of a newly born baby is just a mouse click away at the Shiroda gram panchayat, which has got the distinction of being the first gram panchayat in the entire State to be fully computerized. Shiroda panchayat, the largest in the State, has a population of about 12,000. (GT) MUSIC FOR PEACE: The Porvorim Resident Welfare Association's "Music for Peace" organised on Sunday, was a grand success. The huge gathering of people from all communities and faiths, was entertained with music in Hindi, Marathi, Konkani, Portuguese and English. (GT) BEAUTY AND THE RISK: It would be unreasonable to call Goa an unsafe destination for tourists, particularly women. And, to be fair to the British government, the travel advisory on its website does not call Goa an unsafe destination. It only advises tourists to be careful about certain thingslike "walking alone in isolated spots in the popular tourist areas, especially after dark," as there have been "several recent incidents of sexual assault against women in Goa". (Edit in NT) GMC DEAN: Dr Vishwanath Govind Dhume, professor and head, Department of Pharmacology, has taken over as the Dean of the Goa Medical College with effect from October 1. He is the 17th dean since 1963 when the erstwhile Escola Medica Cirurgica de Goaone of the oldest medical teaching institutions of Asiaestablished by the Portuguese in 1842 was upgraded to Goa Medical College. It is for the first time in the 39 years' history of GMC that a student of the college has taken charge as the head of this premier institution of Goa.
