GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS 07 June 2002 MAJORDA PARISH COUNCIL TAKES UP FOR PRIEST: The Executive Committee of the Parish Pastoral Council of Majorda Church has strongly objected to the false accusations traded by Churchill Alemao against Majorda Parish Priest Fr Leonardo Correia and the clergy of Goa. The panel said that they have been attending church services regularly and at no instance did the priest ever advised the faithful to vote for any particular candidate. (GT)
FISHING BAN FROM TODAY: The state government has imposed a ban on fishing in Goa waters beginning from June 7 to August 15, in accordance with the interim order given by the High Court last year. The UGDP, a partner in the BJ-led coalition government has demanded complete ban on fishing along Goan waters to protect the breeding season and marine life in its 16-point programme. Mathany Saldanha told reporters yesterday that he would fight to protect the breeding period. (NT) CONGRESS SLAMS REPORTS ON DIFFERENCES: The Congress Legislature Party reacted strongly to reports that it was "divided" saying the propaganda was being orchestrated by the BJP only to create a public perception that their own ship was stable. (H) BUS FARES WILL NOT BE HIKED: Transport minister Pandurang Madkaikar yesterday assured that the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices would not spark off an increase in bus fares in the State. (NT) SIOLIM BRIDGE COMPLETION: Nearly a decade since the foundation stone of the bridge was laid, the Siolim-Chopdem bridge has run past numerous deadlines due to technological and political reasons. In a bid to end further uncertainties to the troubled bridge, the newly elected Mandrem MLA Laximikant Parsekar inspected the site and assured that the bridge would be thrown open to traffic on June 28. (H) BRITISH FOREIGN OFFICE'S TRAVEL ADVISE: The British Foreign Office has revised its travel advice to British nationals for India and Pakistan and urged them that they 'should' leave. As a result of the continuing tensions between the two countries, the Foreign Office has modified its earlier advice to 'consider' leaving the country to a more serious tenor. (GT) 220 WORKING DAYS FOR SCHOOLS: Schools in the State should maintain a minimum of 220 working days and 195 instructional days during the academic year 2002-2003, says a DI release. The first term of the scholastic period is from June 10 to October 31 and the second from November 18 to April 26. The vacation break for all schools for Diwali is from November 1 to 16 and mid-term break from December 24 to January 2, 2003. The summer vacations are from April 28 to June 7. (H) MAYEM EVACUEE PROPERTY OWNER'S PLEA: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court has admitted the petition filed by Antonio SC Pereira, owner of evacuee property in Mayem, Bicholim, challenging the laws protecting Mundkars from eviction due to which the High Court's own prior directives could not be followed. (H) CAUSE OF POOR WATER SUPPLY: Poor water management policy of the government, and not shortage of rainfall, has been the main reason for the decline in water supply in the State, claimed Padmashree Norma Alvares. She was speaking at a seminar on fresh water management, organised by the Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers and the Green Triangle Society, to mark the World Environment Day. "Instead of conserving the water, we are polluting it," she added.
