VICE PRESIDENT KANT DEAD: Vice President, Krishan Kant, who as a "young
turk" campaigned for a Left-of-Centre tilt in Congress under Indira Gandhi,
died in New Delhi on July 27 of a massive heart attack, 24 days before he
was to lay down office. Government declared a three-day national mourning
as a mark of respect to the Vice President. (PTI report in Herald)

TWO BUSES COLLIDE AT RIBANDAR: Twelve persons were injured yesterday
morning when a minibus and a private bus collided with each other on the
National Highway near the Government Primary School at Sao Pedro, Ribandar.

OLD GMC ROAD TO BE CLOSED: Residents on the Panjim-Miramar route are in for
a big surprise as a stretch of the DB Bandodkar Road will be closed for
traffic anytime next week for major repair works to be under by the PWD on
the culvert which caved in recently near the Old Goa Medical College. (H)

MARCAIM MURDER CASE: The detection of the Tanuja murder case is proving to
be arduous. Even the efforts of the top officials of the Goa police have
failed to unravel the truth and the motive behind the killing. (NT)

HOPE FOR SANGUEM'S TOURIST SITES: With residents in the Sanguem taluka
citing the Dudhsagar Waterfalls and the Tambdi Surla temple among the many
neglected sites in the taluka, the government has now decided to improve
the tourism potential in Sanguem. "The forest department is planning to
introduce a two-day trip for tourists visiting these beautiful tourist
places. Tourists will be taken to Dudhsagar, Tambdi Surla temple, Sunset
Point at Mollem and Bhagavan Mahaveer wild life sanctuary," informed Forest
Minister Vinay Tendulkar. (H)

APTITUDE OF KIDS: While speaking at a function organised by the Goa
Shikshak Parishad in Margao on Saturday, the Registrar of Goa University,
Dr Jayant Budkule, made a fervent plea to the parents not to impose their
ambitions on their wards but to concentrate more on understanding the
aptitudes of their children. (H)

LOCALS OPPOSE: The Porvorim Residents Action Committee have demanded a
full-fledged Porvorim Municipal Council, comprising the area of Alto
Porvorim, Alto Torda, Alto Brittona, Alto Betim, Alto Pilerne and Alto
Sangolda, which town has fast developed, having a population of 10,000
inhabitants. The Committee has also taken objection to annexing the new
Assembly Complex and surrounding areas of Porvorim to the Panjim Municipal
Council. (H)

NO TAKERS FOR VELIM'S AGORS, BUNDS: The "agors" (traditional water bodies)
and coconut trees dotting the bunds once constituted a substantial source
of revenue (over Rs.1 lakh) for the Comunidade of Velim. Today, however,
things look totally different. (H) 

NO GRAM SABHA IN BENAULIM: The Benaulim panchayat has not held their Gram
Sabha for the last three years. What's worse is that the panchayat records
reveal that for the last ten years, they are irregular in holding them. (NT)

SPICE THEFT: Three employees of a pharmaceutical firm in Pilerne were
arrested yesterday on charges of stealing 3 kilogrammes of spices worth
about Rs.5,000. (H)

ONE GETS BAIL: The NDPS Court, Mapusa, released accused Joseph Francis John
Gomes, of Candolim, who was found in possession of 500 grams of charas, on
bail bond of Rs.25,000 and one local surety of the same amount. (WE-GT)

NO TRUST IN SIOLIM-SODIEM SARPANCH: Four panchayat members of Siolim-Sodiem
panchayat-Prasad Mandrekar, Deepak Haldankar, Jeanette Henriques and Dr
Jawaharlal Henriques-have tabled a no-confidence motion against Sarpanch
Francis Fernandes and Deputy Sarpanch Maria Fernandes. (WE-GT)

HEALTH CAMP AT SALIGAO: Save Goa Society will hold a comprehensive health
camp "Arthritis & Control" on August 3, at the Ayurvedic Natural Health
Centre, Saligao, from 10 am to 4 pm. The camp will educate the people on
the various aspects of arthritis, its prevention, cure and control.

STUDENT NEEDS AID: Master Wavel Peter Joao, a student of Mustifund Middle
School, Panaji, requires urgent held from Goans as he is battling "acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia" at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. The
treatment will last two years and cost about Rs.3 lakh. (WE-GT)

CULTURAL COMPLEXES PLANNED: The Directorate which deals with the
preservation, promotion and development of cultural traditions of the
state, besides launching new schemes and activities, will establish
Ravindra Bhavans, the cultural complexes in each taluka except Tiswadi, the

OLD YELLOW-BLACK TAXIS TO GO: Its now the turn of the yellow and black
taxis, autorickshaws and motorcycle taxis, which are more than 15 years
old, to be scrapped as per the new scheme proposed by the State government.

FUNDS FOR MAPUSA: Law Minister and Mapusa MLA advocate Francis D'Souza
disclosed that the government has sanctioned special development project
grant of three-and-half crore for Mapusa municipality. (WE-GT)

the finals of 31 st Custodio Memorial Football Tournament at Raia. Sao Jose
de Areal Sports Club defeated Raitura Sports Club 2-1 to enter the quarter
finals of the Varca Panchayat Cup football tournament. FC Siolim romped
into the quarterfinal of Brunei and Brunet Caterers football tournament at
Curtorim. Friends Circle defeated Caranzalem Footballers 3-2 to move ahead
in the Sao Minguel seven-a-side football tournament at Taleigao. Rocky
VIII, Dona Paula, defeated Bambolim Centre 5-4 to enter the finals of the
directors Special Soccer tournament at Santa Cruz. (H)
