Salcete panchayats face garbage disposal problem.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
With no garbage dumping yard at sight, the village panchayats in Salcette
taluka
are in a search of a suitable place for disposing off their garbage.
The Margao Municipal Council's decision not to allow garbage from the
panchayats
on its already overflowing Sonsodo garbage dump, has put the panchayats in
a dilemma.
Most of the panchayats fear that with no place to dump the waste,
there may give rise to a panicky situation.

Panchayats like Navelim, Rumdamol-Davorlim, Loutolim, Camurlim and Curtorim
are about to press panic button with garbage disposal becoming a major
headache for them.
"What are we supposed to do. Can we swallow it," questioned Navelim panchayat
secretary, Mr Subhodh Prabudesai, who was seemingly upset as he had to face
the ire of villagers.

This panchayat office situated along the national highway has set a best
example
of how the panchayats cannot even save its office buildings from becoming
a garbage dumping ground. One can see heaps of garbage-especially plastic
waste-piled up within 100 mts of its radius at Navelim.

Admits Navelim sarpanch, Ms M Carneiro,"Once we had cleared it,
but now such a huge quantum has accumulated that it's difficult to clear it."
Panchayats of Benaulim and Colva face this garbage disposal problem. "
The solution will have to be worked out in association with neighbouring
panchayats
like Varca and Colva," conceded Benaulim's deputy sarpanch, Mr Trevor Pinto.

The recent Benaulim panchayat gramsabha had this issue figuring prominently
with the anxious villagers seeking to know what steps the panchayat has
initiated.
"We have to form committees to mend the garbage which is dumped along side
the main roads of the villages," suggested a panchayat member.

This issue has not even left St Jose De Areal village panchayat. "Heaps of
garbage,
plastic bags, carcasses are seen accumulating at the junctions like
Ramnagari, Mugalli,"
claims president of Curtorim Union, Mr Santan Rodrigues. He termed garbage
problem
as "grave" in this panchayat.

"During rains, the garbage dumped at Ramnagri flows down on the road
causing difficulty
to the vehicles," lamented Mr Rodrigues, who has brought this issue to the
notice
of South Goa collector, Mr J B Singh. In response to Mr Rodrigues' letter,
the collector had directed Salcete mamalatdar to inspect the site at Ramnagri
and explore possibility of invoking Section 133 CrPC,
if deemed necessary under the intimation of the office.
