Panaji, Sep 30: The Goa government has issued an official clarification denying suggestiions made by a British travel advisory that warns of assault cases on foreign women in this tourist state. The advisory cautions travellers to "not walk alone in isolated spots in the popular tourist areas after dark. Visitors should respect local codes of dress and behaviour. There have been several recent incidents of sexual assault against women in Goa". Goa's government, which received the best domestic destination award recently, said it officially clarified to British authorities that the charge was untrue. Goa is considered one of the safest destinations for women's safety. "There were only six or seven assault cases on foreign women in the past eleven years", state chief minister Manohar Parrikar claimed here. Half of them are date rapes, which result from a cultural misunderstanding. In other cases, the government has taken action, he said, dismissing one accused constable. It has also borne the cost of flying down victims for the cases. "Someone has an interest in spoiling our name. London is more unsafe than Goa and has a higher incidence of rape", said Mr Parrikar. Officials here said they suspected that the advisory, which went up three months back, may be the result of a trade war, between rival charter operators. Sixty percent of the three lakh foreigners who visit the state annually are from the UK.
