C. D'SILVA HONOURED IN KUWAIT.

Konkani Stage artiste C. D'Silva was felicitated in Kuwait by Konkani
Heritage Kuwait on 18th of this month at Hotel Village Inn, Kuwait City.
The felicitation function was attended by a good number of people, Goans,
Magaloreans and people from other Konkani speaking areas in India. C.
D'Silva was recently honoured by the Government of Goa with a prestigious
State Award and also by Goa's famed Kala Academy. During his last 50 years
of stage acting Mr. Silva acted in innumerable dramas performing different
types of roles. He is also a very good playwright, director, singer and
composer. Recently in the Sangit Sanz organized by Kuwait Konknni Kendr,
Silva gained major limelight by performing the role of old lady "Garamae"
along with another visiting ace comedian Benevangelisto. During the
felicitation function which was also attended by the two priests Fr. Melwyn
and Fr. John and a Deacon Sylvester from Kuwait Church, every speaker
showered abundant praises on Silva. The function started with a welcome
speech by the president of KHK Fidelis Fernandes, then Chief Guest Elvino
Rodrigues president of KKK and Guest of Honour Johny Suratkal carried
forward the praises on Silva. The other speakers who highlighted the good
work of Silva were Goan Stage Artistes Rosary Ferns, Sylvester Vaz who is
currently in Kuwait, Querobina Carvalho, Fr. John Fernandes, Fr. Melwin and
KCWA president Ida D'Silva. A poetry was recited by literary figure Lancy
Pinto Nayak. During the function some cultural items were also performed
namely solos by Bab Agnelo in praise of priests and their vocation, Rosary
Ferns on anger in which he recollected how Araujo a Goan from St. Cruz had
murdered 2 persons in Kuwait out of anger and highlighted the curse of
anger, Querobina on her personal experience on day to day matters, Marcos
Vas on C. D'Silva and C. D'Silva with his beautiful serene voice rendered
very melodiously one of his old numbers of course to the delight of everyone
and a duet was rendered by Roney & Jasmine. A Mando with Dulpod was
rendered by Rosary, Goretti, Sylvester Vaz, Mario Rebello, Conchita and
Apolina. Before serving the buffet, KHK Vice President Joseph D'Souza
proposed the vote of thanks. The KHK Memento was presented to C. D'Silva by
Fidelis Fernandes.

Among the speakers everyone highlighted the importance of Konkani to
preserve and protect our unique characteristics. Since there were very many
Mangaloreans among the audience, everyone spoke in the unity of both the
communities. Johny Suratkal a writer from Mangalore and a businessman in
Kuwait described how important Konkani is for us while Ms Ida Lobo the
acting president of Kuwait Canara Welfare Association with her lovely
appearance and beautifully prepared speech told the gathering that it is
Konkani that brought us Mangaloreans and Goans together. She also requested
everyone to impart Konkani to our children. In her Konkani Mae has a very
powerful orator among the females. Well known literary giant Lancy Pinto
Nayak dazzled the entire audience by reciting a beautiful poetry "Aum
Konnacho". Because of the greatness of the topic he received more
applauding from the audience. Fr. Melwyn spoke of the good work Konkani
organizations are doing in Kuwait and assured his help for any such
activities in the future while his visiting colleague from Hubli Fr. John
Fenandes expressed his total satisfaction on the proceedings which he said
of very high quality. On behalf of Goans Rosary Ferns, Querobina and
Sylvester Vaz showered ample praises on C. D'Silva by describing Silva's
work. Sylvester Vaz a magnificent figure among the audience captured the
hearts of the audience by delivering a very intellectual and historical
speech on the life of D'Silva and proved to everyone that he is not only a
stage artiste of high calibre but also a great orator, so too Querobina and
Rosary Ferns showed these qualities in their speeches. Elvino Rodrigues in
his speech showed his concern for not producing Konkani workers. He said it
is the same people for so many years now involving in Konkani activities and
new faces are rarity. He asked "will the present generation able to
shoulder the responsibility of promoting and protecting Konkani in the
future"? This writer compered the proceedings.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.
