Dear George Pinto,

Thanks for your comments. I do not feel qualified to
criticize Bharat Ratna Mother Teresa, who was a finer
Indian citizen than I am. When I met her, I could not
tell her exact skin colour because of her numerous
wrinkles. But I have seen many Indians with fairer
skin than she had. I feel she would have heartily
approved of your concern for marginalized people of
colour, many of whom she knew and loved on a
first-name basis among the poorest homeless in
Calcutta.

There are Goans among those who continue her work.
Some of them might have Caucasian genes, dating from
millenia ago, and (wait for it) even fairer skin than
she had. I do not feel qualified to criticize them
either. In fact, I do not feel particularly worthy to
even undo their sandal straps.

I hope you will succeed in exposing and punishing all
evil-doers.

Regards,

Joel Almeida

Dear Joel,

Your avoidance of the tough questions in my post has been noted, including your
holier-than-thou
attitude. I have seen this many times on these forums. What Mother Theresa stood for
what not my
point. I am not interested in "exposing and punishing all evil-doers", which was also
not my
point.

George

Subject: Re: [Goanet] NEWS: Who's ready for cow's urine?

Here's a nice rebuttal to my post by Subhash Paradkar, which for some
reason did not show up on Goanet even though he had copied it to it.
I will post my response to it when I can find some time.

Cheers,

Santosh

SUBHASH PARADKAR'S POST

Dear Santosh:

(1) I am here in the US for the past 34 years and work as a
consultant to US Patent and Trademark Office. In recent years,
Americans are researching Aayurvedic medications for three reasons:

(a) Does the usage of these ancient medicines statistically change,
facilitate any improvements or improve the condition of the patient?,

(b) Should it be used as a supplement to diet, exercise under a
supervision of a medical doctor, and (c) Can they make money by using
by taking patents and claiming these medicines as their own
inventions.

Foreigners have always done that to the people of Indian origin
regardless of our own region or faith.

(2) National Institute of Health here has received US grant to study
alternative medicines because drug companies with professional
chemists and scientists take took long to come up with drugs that
work on rats, but have side effects on a human body. It is now
recognized by spiritual leaders of all faiths, learned medical
professionals, and social scientists that human being needs to
balance his or her body, mind and soul to achieve happiness (Santosh)
throughout the life process.

(3) Ancient Rishi Pantanjali from Uttarpradesh was known for Grammar,
Aayurveda, and Yoga Philosophy. US medical professions have now
accepted that Raaj Yoga or Dhyan Yoga (Meditation) helps people
relax, reduce blood pressure, and improve many deceases in humankind.
Another Rishi Charaka was known for herbal medicines, and the
techniques of surgery. He described qualities of 100,000 herbal
plants. Charak Sanhita says."That man remains free from desease who
takes healthy food and habits; who is not slave of desires; who
observes all creatures with equanimity; who always follows the truth
in his heart, speech and action; who is forgiving; and who keeps the
company of noble people." Rishi Charaka was an ardent advocate of
preventive medicine and emphasized the influence of diet and activity
on body and mind.

(4) In recent years, Americans made efforts to register patent on
Turmeric and Basmati Rice. There was an uproar here in Indian
community (sleeping giant). Indian Govt. then (not BJP Coalition)
made a case with the US Dept of State that Turmeric and Basmati Rice
do not even grow in the US, but has been in India for thousand
years . India (not VHP) won the case. Then, Indians abroad and in
Indian Aayurvedic doctors got smart and made sure that many items who
have been historically used by our grandparents as home remedies are
protected from the greed of western civilization. We now have
Aayurvedic doctors doing scientific research at NIH, Chyavanprash for
longevity, karela and methi for diabetes, and castor oil for
psoriasis are now recognized. For many years, I took American drugs
for my sinus problem that was cured with no side effect by taking
Ginger tea with honey and lime in the morning. It saved hundreds of
dollars, and reduced dependency on American drugs. We needs to have
faith in our roots and our own genius.

(5) Our Prime Minister Morarji Desai of congress party, a Hindu and
Gandhian did tell American reporter that he drank his own urine.
American press ridiculed him, called him a CIA agent, and ignored
that he lived a peaceful long life without stress. BJP and VHP were
not credited for his good health or straight forwardness. McDonalds
was fined in the US for frying french fries in beef and pork fat that
increased cholesterol in children and elders alike. When we are
under fear and divided because of internal issues, we fail to
recognize the intentions of foreigners in our land. If Coca-Cola
discovered that Cow's urine is really helpful to human body, they
would patent it or buy the patent, give it another brand name, remove
the smell and color, bottle it in India with cheap labor, and sell it
back to the world and India at 1000 times its cost for profit. That
is capitalism.

(6) We need to focus on India's national security, freedom and
economic prosperity regardless of our affiliation to our region,
language, faith or prejudices. We should enjoy the fruits of all our
ancient rishis, freedom struggle of our forefathers, and be willing
to trade our goods and services in International market place at a
fair price for our people. Otherwise, the West will dictate us the
prices of all our herbs, turmeric, curry and rice. The tragedy of
human history is decreasing happiness (Santosh) in the midst
of increasing comforts (materialism).

(7) Let us not see everything evil in fellow Indians. Our culture has
survived intimidation from Alexander, Babar, Aurangjeb, Adil Shah, and
British Raj, not to mention uppercaste Hindus. To fight back, India
did produce Chanakya, Shivaji, Gandhiji, Sant Gyaneshwar, Sai baba
and Guru Nanak. God has blessed India with enough sense of history
that any excesses will not be tolerated by her citizens. Truth always
prevails in India, but not without temporary pain.

With highest regards,

Subhash Paradkar

Subject: Re: [Goanet] Houston Goan Convention - A Blast!

I am sorry my description of the Goan Convention in Houston was not
thorough and exhaustive. For instance, I did not mention that Alfred
Braganza was a keynote speaker at the convention, and contributed a
nice article on Goan culture to the convention souvenir. His article
will shortly be put up on the website along with the rest of the
souvenir. The souvenir also contains a brief biodata on this
illustrious Konkani lover. Indeed, he contributed a lot to the
success of the convention, as did many other people. Dr. Pramod
Pathak, a prominent Indian scholar who has documented and studied
Goan Tulsi Vrindavans and Holy Crosses was the chief quest, and gave
an elaborate speech on his work.

I have not mentioned many other names of people who contributed in
significant ways to the success of the convention. I would like to
apologize for these omissions. The purpose of my earlier post was
simply to provide a brief description of the convention, and mention
some highlights from my horribly limited perspective. It was not
meant to acknowledge the remarkable contributions of all the people
who helped us make it a success.

Cheers,

Santosh

Subject: [Goanet] Fw: Comments on All party meeting to reject the SC directives to EC.

NT. JULY 9, 2002
Front Page Box
Order on candidates' background stands: EC

NEW DELHI, July 8 (PTI): despite an all-party meeting rejecting it, the
Election Commission today said its order on seeking criminal antecedents of
candidates would stand and be enforced in the election to lone Rajya Sabha
seat in Maharashtra on July 25.
"The affidavit is in position. The commission is only following a Supreme
Court directive," commission sources said. Prescribing the affidavit, the
commission had made it clear on June 20 that non-furnishing of full and
complete information by a candidate would be considered violative of the
court's directive.
The last date for filing of nominations in the Rajya Sabha election is
July 15, the day the monsoon session of Parliament begins.
The sources said the commission had turned down a request by the
government to seek a fresh directive from the apex court on the issue since
it was going to hold an all-party meeting to discuss the matter.

NT. EDITORIAL , July 10, 2002.
Without Any Checks

IDEOLGICAL DISTINCTIONS WERE blurred when it came to rejecting the
Election Commission's recommendation making it necessary for candidates
contesting an election to declare details of their assets and criminal
antecedents. In a rare show of unanimity the representatives of all parties
at an all-party meeting made it explicitly clear that they were not inclined
to abide by the Supreme Court order and the directives of the Election
Commission. The leaders, who have been winning sympathy of the people by
shouting hoarse over the rise in corruption and criminalisation of politics,
ironically described the Supreme Court's verdict and EC's directive as
untenable.
It is really sad that someone like Mr. Arun Jaitley, who stands for
ethical politics, rejected the directives on the ground that criminal
offences can sometimes be political. Then there was the observation of the
Union Law Minister, Mr. Jana Krishnamurthy who in his eagerness to undo the
recommendations of the Election Commission put the politicians at par with
the Supreme Court. He observed: "The meeting appreciated the Supreme Court
judgment, but each of us is supreme in our respective spheres and as far as
enactment of laws go, Parliament is supreme." There is no doubt that
Parliament is supreme, but a common citizen has got the right to know what
the parliamentarians have done to curb this menace? Why has the malady been
infecting the bodypolitik? What is even worse is that the politicians
propose to support a legislation within a week to safeguard their narrow
interests.
The deliberations leave no room for doubt that the politicians are not at
all interested in fighting corruption and criminalisation of politics. How
could the criminal antecedents, or for that matter, the information about
the candidate's assets, liabilities, educational qualifications be
politically misused? The criminals who enter politics or the politicians who
have criminal background use legislator's office to acquire immunity and
levers to pressurize the government machinery into not acting against them.
Do the politicians really treat the people of the country as naïve, ignorant
creatures? Whom do they want to fool? People who know everything but are
scared to open their mouth due to their criminal acts. It is really a matter
of shame for the political system and the politicians. It is indeed a matter
of great surprise that a person like Mr. Advani, who fought against
corruption and criminalisation of politics, could become a part of the
decision.
A common citizen has the right to know why the political parties and the
leaders are scared of the Supreme Court verdict. The Leftist leaders echoed
the sentiments of their Rightist colleagues and Rightists quoted the
Leftists in their quest to stall the implementation of SC's directive. All
touted the view that the directive would pose serious obstructions and needs
to be amended. It is extreme form of hypocrisy that the politicians who have

been harping on the need to fight against the criminalisation, are now
shying away from it. Why, instead of appreciating the initiative of the
Supreme Court, are they asserting the element of their supremacy? The
government too has suddenly come to realize of the urgency to maintain
politician's supremacy. Mr. Krishnamurthy articulated the mood: "Politicians
are racing against time". One wonders how? What made him to come out with
such statement? Why the minister is in a hurry to bring a bill on it within
a week? One wonders why the government is not at al willing to allow the
Election Commission to implement the corrective measures? If the EC fails to
do justice, it can take corrective (actions) in future to rectify the wrong.
It is really strange why there is reluctance to allow the EC to act.
Political leaders must realize that the Supreme Court came out with its
directive when Parliament and political leaders had raised their hands and
expressed their helplessness. The politicians even acknowledged the fact
that more and more persons having criminal background were entering into
Parliament and assemblies. How are they going to prevent more and more of
them entering the legislatures without any checks?

COMMENTS:
floriano lobo

Hats off to the Election Commission of India, specially the Chief Election
Commissioner, for staying put on the directives of the Supreme Court. If
at all there is hope for this nation, it is the Honourable Justices of our
nation's Supreme Court and the autonomous Election Commission of India. Only
the combined efforts of these two apex bodies can send the cutting signal to
all the criminals in our august People's Parliament and Legislative
Assemblies that the hinges of the doors to nation's jails are being well
oiled to close behind them, sooner or later.

It is small wonder that Lal Krishna Advani is part of the gang who sees a
terrible threat in the directives of the Supreme Court. These are the master
criminals who hide behind the wave of petty criminals in the party and the
parliament. Remove the petty criminals and the support of master criminals
is eroded. That will see them closer and closer to the all accomodating
jails which they have been evading by meticulously consolidating their
positions of power inch by inch. I certainly like to be elucidated by the
editor of Navhind Times, Mr. Arun Sinha as to how, where and when did Lal
Krishna Advani fight against corruption and criminalisation of politics. Is
it through his rethorics of 'Zero Tolerance for Corruption' that he been
preaching in Goa and elsewhere? He could do by preaching about that to the
ex-BJP president who was caught red handed on tape by Tehelka for accepting
bribes. As far as I am concerned, this singular person is responsible for
undermining the secularity of the sacred Constitution of India and is edging
his way upwards little by little to re-write it with a fascist tinge. This
poisonous double timing viper need to be shut up in a cold dark dungeon for
the rest of his miserable life if this nation wants to be up and about.

The Supreme Court has come up with a master stroke. All the rats, who were
trying to show off as gentlemen are seen running for cover. Where the hell
are the professing saints ? Where is Vajpayee? It is very difficult to
imagine that all have been hypocrites. What is the meaning of UNNANIMITY OF
DECISION? This means that all of them, without exception, would sell their
mothers to the red light area to keep themselves in power. And the new
hypocrite on the scene, who has not even had a chance to dry his political
umbilical cord, is telling us that each of us is supreme in our respective
spheres. The only sphere that this 'Charlie' is supreme about is his sphere
that is hovering around Ayodhya and Ram Temple. Putting this bigot in the
chair of the Union Law Minister is the greatest injustice that Vajpayee has
done to the nation. Perhaps, it was L.K. Advani prompting from behind the
curtains when Vajpayee at the center stage distributing the goodies? The
Supreme Court has given the people of the nation a chance to peep into the
political kaleidoscope and to see the colour spectrum of the rats who could'
nt wait to be people's representatives. Shame on us to have thought that
these rats had honourable intentions.

Goa Su-Raaj Party is working on "CONGRATULATORY" letters that it wants to
send to the Justices of the Supreme Court and to the Chief Election
Commisioner for their golden gift to the Nation. May their hands be
strengthened million folds to withstand the fight the devils in our august
Parliament are sure to put up. Hopefully, the CVC (Chief Vigilance
Commissioner) will join-in for the coup de grace, let us pray.

To,
Mr. S.C. Verenkar,
Director of Fisheries,
Panjim- GOA.

Sir,

Sub: Failure to implement "Goa Fishing Rule" on Mesh -Size by the
Directorate of Fisheries. Ref: "Fisheries Department fails to crack whip on
use of mesh size" Herald dt. 05/07/2002.

The Herald, as referred to above, has reported your comments stating that
the Goa Fisheries Rules on mesh size are 'impracticable' and 'not advisable'
. (xerox copy of the paper cutting enclosed). If you own that statement
reported therein, then we would like to enlighten you that this rule on fish
net mesh size control is not new to Goa. This rule was very effectively
implemented by the erstwhile Portuguese regime. There is nothing indigenous
about this rule as this is followed internationally to protect the juvenile
fish. Once upon a time, Goa enjoyed abundance of fish in its seas as well
as in its estuaries and rivers. Today, because this important rule is bent,
if not totally abrogated due to the overpowering predominant influence of
the fishing lobby over the governments of the day and its bureaucracy, for
their own vested interests, Goa's marine as well as the estuarine fish
resources are depleted and many species are either extinct or are on the
verge of extinction. Furthermore, your kind attention is drawn the very
disturbing comment that you have made in the above mentioned newspaper
report: Quote Tomorrow, the fisheries officials cannot just go and
confiscate the nets and thus bring the activity to a standstill" Unquote.
Such a statement coming from a supposedly responsible person such as the
Director of Fisheries is, indeed, in very bad taste and demands immediate
apology. This type of attitude adopted by the custodians of law promotes
lack of respect for the laws in the people who have to obey them.

Secondly, taken the issue of government's current ban imposed on mechanized
fishing, effective from 1st. June to 15th. August, 2002, your office has
issued directives to all concerned fishermen to observe the ban in toto.
According to the reports reaching our office, we believe that some
politically well placed fishermen's groups have planned to fish from 25th.
July, 2002 to defy the ban, to follow the example of last year. If this
happens, is your department ready to swing into action and not only arrest
the violators and impound their boats and trawlers but also suspend their
licenses for a period of 6 months or more? Or will you derelict your
official duties by shifting the blame elsewhere just as you have indicated
through your comments as mentioned above? If that happens, then it will be a
clear cut case of ''Contempt of High Court", and as such, necessary
proceedings shall be filed against you and your department, seeking your
removal from office while holding you solely responsible for helping vested
interests to promote anarchy and get away with it.

We further remind you, sir, that your suggestions as reported in the above
mentioned newspaper report of making the fishermen aware of the need for the
control of mesh size through awareness workshops etcetera is fine as long as
it helps to forewarn the would be offenders of this rule of their potential
arrests, heavy penalties and on the spot suspension of their fishing
licenses. But to leave it to the discretion of the fishermen to follow the
rules through such awareness programmes is highly presumptive and borders
on absurdity. This will be tantamount to kicking the law around and
conspiring to deprive the people of Goa their staple food from their plates.
Please be assured that your inaction to implement, in totality, the
fishing ban upto 15th. August, 2002 as provided by the law, as well as
your inaction to implement, in the strictest possible manner, the mesh-size
rule for the fishing nets, will be taken as blatant aberrations in
governance on the part of the government and specifically your department.
Therefore, you are hereby forewarned to expect massive people's agitation to
restore the rule of law in this land where all principles are seen to be
compromised for selfish personal interests of the corrupted few, and in
which, the government bureaucracy has been playing a major unhindered
role.

Hoping that better sense will prevail and the rule of law will be upheld at
all costs.
Thanking you,

Yours truly,
for Goa Su-Raaj Party
