During my lecture-visit to Macau during this week I did not resist calling
upon Ole-Xac! Many on Goanet, including Fred himself, have tried in the past to
trace the whereabouts of "mysterious" Bernado Colaco who has accompanied Goan
affairs on Goanet and several other forums with a vehement passion for pre-1961
Goa and with equally vehement revulsion for the "bharatis"!
What did I find behind the internet-familiar nickname of ole-xac? A cheerful
and active middle-aged Goa-lover! Over a delicious lunch-break of chinese
iam-chan (?) to which I was generously invited by the Colaco couple, I was
pleasantly surprised to meet an old acquaintance: BC's charming wife Xela Dias!
Her father's face may have been familiar to all the Britto students who
borrowed books from the school library! Fred must have been surely a voracious
book-eater! At least in the pre-internet era. Xela had also frequented the
Portuguese language course at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research when I
was still around. She confesses that it proved to be a good start. She uses it
everyday in Macau (along with basic Cantonese). She insisted in maintaining
conversation with me in fluent Portuguese!
Though Bernado had often succeeded in provoking me on the goanet and some other
nets, I do not think he will succeed in doing so any further! Not after
interacting with him personally in the land of A-Ma!
