Abbe Farias 250th Birth Anniversary.--Rare European honour
Commemorative postcard to be released on May 31.
World famous hypnotist, priest and revolutionary, Abbe Faria will become the
first
Goan to be honoured by a member of the European Union with a Commemorative
postcard
on the occasion of his 250th birth anniversary on May 31, 2006.
This rare distinction is only the second of its type accorded to any Goan after
Portugal commemorated Blessed Joseph Vaz with a postal stamp on the occasion of
his
300th birth anniversary.
FACTFILE:
-Jose Custodio Faria, (Abbe Faria) was born in Candolim on May 31. 1756.
-He went to Portugal with his father in 1771, studied priesthood and was
ordained in
Rome.
-He moved to France in 1788, took part in the French Revolution and was jailed
in
Chateau dIf prison.
-In prison, he worked on The Lucid Cause of Sleep, still used as a research
manual.
-Immortalised in Alexander Dumas epic, The count of Monte Cristo.
-At the age of 24, Abbe Faria, referred to as The Father of Hypnotism
-He died in France on September 30, 1819. (GT)
