The former Portuguese President, Jorge Sampaio, expressed doubts if the Canadian authorities apply same rules to all illegal immigrants, or are discriminating against the Portuguese. The local daily PUBLICO also reported that the Portuguese foreign minister visiting Canada to resolve the crisis provoked by the deportation of the illegal Portuguese immigrants refused to give a press conference because the Canadian authorities did not allegedly allow the Portuguese media to be present. In a radio report by TSF, a prestigious Portuguese radio agency, a Canadian lawyer defending the cases of some Portuguese immigrants threatened by the new measures accused the Portuguese authorities of politicising the issue, while they were fully aware of the illegal practices and did not take any measures in time to normalise the situation. It also reported the complaints of some representatives of immigrant minorities in Portugal who accused Portuguese authorities of double standards towards its own immigrants in Portugal.
