FROM HERE AND THERE ----------------------------------------------------------------- OCEANS, AFTER THE TSUNAMI: Kavita Singh of the Information Technology Group at the National Institute of Oceanography Goa, India http://www.nio.org points out to news updated recently on http://www.coastalhazards.info and http://www.bwmindia.com Kavita can be contacted by voice: 91 0832 2450409 email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For more news, check this post-tsunami site http://www.coastalhazards.info Physics of Tsunamis: The phenomenon we call a tsunami (soo-NAH-mee) is a series of waves of extremely long wave length and long period generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that displaces the water. Tsunamis are primarily associated with earthquakes in oceanic and coastal regions. Landslides, volcanic eruptions, nuclear explosions, and even impacts of objects from outer space (such as meteorites, asteroids, and comets) can also generate tsunamis. URL: http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/physics.htm CURRY AND A KING, QUERBIN LARRY MENDONCA: Carmo D'Cruz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> reports from Melbourne in Australia that he visited Larry Mendonca at the famous Rajah Sahib Tavern and Tandoori Grill, and he has "hit the Melbourne City Council for a Sixer". Just a few days ago he won his appeal to the Supreme Court and was exhonerated of any wrong doing and will be reimbursed the entire court costs and fines. Writes D'Cruz: "This is great news. Please (inform) everyone about it. I could'nt believe it until he showed me the news paper clippings and also heard his interview following the dismissal of charges on a popular radio station. "I hope the Goan Press gives Larry appropriate coverage of this great news and he is destined to get a good bounce back from this David vs Goliath episode." D'Cruz says visiting him at the Rajah Sahib was a "35-year old dream come true for me". For the last few years, he says, he visiting his web-site at www.rajahsahib.com.au "Going through the framed photos of Larry with his famous visitors took nearly three hours," says the US-based former IITian and engineering educator D'Cruz. "I must add that Larry Mendonca has displayed some of the characteristics of a true entrepreneur -- prolific promotional skills, pride in and profound knowledge of India's heritage, sticking to the knitting (food-service, Indian food), passion for curry and cricket, persistence against all odds, resilience from setbacks, risk-taking, etc. We need more Goans with those characteristics....," he says. Larry is also geeting press coverage for his grandfather John Mendonca (former ADC to His Highness Maharaja Shahaji of Kolhapur) who shot a Bengal Tiger in 1910 and saved the life of King George V, while he was on a pig-sticking expedition on his visit to India as Prince of Wales, according to D'Cruz. Here is one newspaper account of the dismissal of charges against Larry Mendonca in Aug 2005. http://origin.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,16165499% 255E2862,00.html HISTORY HOUR AT XCHR: Xavier Centre of Historical Research, the Jesuit-run research centre at Alto Porvorim announces its next history hour on the topic, Social Damage done by Goa’s Language Controversy and the Conspiracy behind it by Ramnath G. ANNOUNCING EVENTS IN GOA: Desmond Nazareth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> tells us, "Just in case you have not encountered this information before and if you want to increase publicity for an event (lectures, performances, competitions, gigs, film screenings, etc.) you are involved with, consider posting it on the site http://www.findall-goa.com/, using the following link: http://www.findall-goa.com/Pages/Events_Submit.htm "It appears to me like a pretty good site. If you also find it useful, pass the word around, even if to people who are just interested in finding out what's up on a given day. Lots of us can benefit. "Goa needs something like this -- I find local newspapers pretty spotty about listing a comprehensive list of the day's events. I have no personal knowledge of who runs the site and no personal investment in making this recommendation, in case you were wondering!" Desmond is a film-maker based in Goa. ACKNOWLEDGE THE SOURCES, EH? From Eddie Fernandes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> says, I did wonder if your source of the Goa Rurbanism item was the GVUK account but then I felt that if that was the case, you would surely have acknowledged it. While this is not a justification, we regret the error, and request all submitting news items to acknowledge the primary or secondary sources where these items come from with URLs where-ever possible. And yes, our news-compiling efforts do need a whole lot of volunteers, with innovative ideas of where to source Goa-related inputs from, to diversify the range of views we all read.] NOTE FROM THE GULF: This comes from Robinson/Santana-Abu Dhabi and is addressed to the chief minister of Goa. It says, "We the undersigned Non-Resident Indians of Goan Origin call upon your kind attention to the anxiety and distress caused to the NRI community due to the Goa Government’s plan to construct an International Airport at Mopa in the extreme north of the State. We are sure that the Government has plans to develop Goa and make life better for Goans. But we believe that such plans should be executed on sustainable development basis of the developed areas and develop the underdeveloped areas as opposed to “Destroy the developed and develop the underdeveloped. The current location of Goa’s only airport is not only conveniently located and equidistance from any extreme borders of Goa but well connected by road and is arms distance from the railway line. Moreover, this airport serves the NRIs communities of the border districts of the neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka as well...."
