Govt favours transfer of land rights to occupants NT Staff Reporter Panaji Feb 14: The Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsing Rane, today said that his government was in favour of transfer the rights of lands to the occupants. The Chief Minister made this statement on the floor of the legislative assembly, while intervening in the motion debate on motion of thanks to the Governor's address, when members from opposition benches raised the matter of people not getting the rights over the lands occupied by them. Mr Rane said that all formalities relating to transfer of rights have to be completed before the rights were given, when the Valpoi legislator, Mr Narhari Haldankar of Bharatiya Janata Party, said that problems of farmers have not been solved despite many years. Earlier, the three BJP members including Mr Haldankar and Mr Vasudev M Gaonkar (Sanguem) and Ramesh Tawadkar (Poiguinim) listed the problems of the people staying in their constituencies. The BJP legislators also brought to the notice of the House that among the sufferers were the farmers and kumeri cultivators, who have been facing uncertain future. Mr Haldankar demanded that a full-time deputy collector be posted in Valpoi to settle the encroachment cases, as the part-time official posted now was unable to handle the large number of cases in Sattari taluka and settle them. Mr Tawadkar stated that the government was neglecting the people from the Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, even as he urged an end to corruption. -- Peace be with you! Gabe Menezes.
