In an interesting development and a literal boost to
the Konkani in Roman script movement, it is now
officially confirmed that Fr Pratap Naik, SJ, Director
Thomas Stephen Kendra, Porvorim a well known
researcher and the man spearheading the recognition
for Konkani in Roman script had indeed resigned on 5th
September 2005 as General Council Member from the Goa
Konkani Academy which was formed in 1984.
Fr Pratap Naik speaking to this writer, feels saddened
that the " people of Goa have been betrayed on the
script on 21st November 1981 ( and not as alleged
during the pre KPA movement days ) when a section of
the ONLY DEVANAGARI script Konkani infiltrated into
the ranks of the Advisory Board for Konkani of the
Sahitya Akademi New Delhi and "unanimously recommended
that Devanagari should remain the script for Konkani.
Till this date the GKA has not been able to convince
the Goans on who decided on the script" Fr Naik
stated.
Indeed the resignation according to Fr Naik "was
necessitated as the GKA paid stepmotherly treatment to
the cause of Roman script Konkani" .
This resignation apparently is in tune with the
demands of lovers of Konkani in Roman script that ALL
MEMBERS favouring the equal treatment of Roman script
with Devanagari script in Goa and who suscribe to the
view Unity in (Konkani) Diversity (in scripts) should
not remain in the organisations which subscribe to the
ONLY DEVANAGIRI SCRIPT .
When this writer brought this news to the public
coming as it is on the first day of the amateurs 31st
tiatr competition 2005-06 being held at the Kala
Academy beginning this evening there was great
rejoicing and several at the Kala Academy applauded
the stand taken by Fr Pratap Naik.
Fr Pratap Naik who has recently been to Mangalore to
attend the pro Kannada script for Konkani which has
gained tremendous support in Karnataka recieved a
boost for his efforts in Goa. The people of Karnataka
too believe that Devanagari should not be imposed on
them and they fully support the demand of Goans for
the Konkani in Roman script.

tommorrow.
Incidentally the resignation which was sent to the
Secretary, GKA has not been accepted and efforts to
ascertain the reason for the inordinate delay from the
Office of the GKA were futile.
There are unconfirmed reports that several others are
likely to follow suit as the signature campaign
carried out after the official sanction of the Church
in Goa is gaining grounds as per the last reports
received from the group spearheading the movement.
Meanwhile according to Mr Wilson Mazarello prominent
tiatrist and unanimously elected President of the
Dalgado Konknni Akademi who spoke to this writer this
morning confirmed that the tiatrist in Goa are one on
the issue and they have been building support as they
stage plays in the State even outside; "let it be
clear" he said "tiatrists will leave no stone unturned
to spread the message the days to come need to be
watched its now or never " he stated.
