Re: Dr. Jose Pereira’s and Mr. Jorge Noronha’s comments on the Abbe Faria

I have a small comment to offer for what it is worth on the above subject. 
It’s evident from the 2-page long address to ‘Most Faithful Kings’ 
(translated and reprinted as document 50 in Cunha Rivara’s Goa and the 
Revolt of 1787 )just below his dedication of his thesis that Faria thought 
he owed everything he had achieved to his Sovereign and may have considered 
his homily in the queen’s chapel a test of his worthiness. So, I think, 
irrespective of his fluency in Portuguese it would not be unnatural to 
feeling intimidated and tongue-tied at the thought of being judged below the 
queen’s standards. Such a situation did not arise in his oration before the 
pope, whether delivered in 1775 or 1780.
