Security beefed up in Goa in the backdrop of Varanasi riots Panaji | March 08, 2006 1:42:36 PM IST Security has been beefed up and patrolling intensified in all parts of Goa, particularly in temple towns, in view of the riots in Varanasi yesterday. Deputy Inspector General of Police (crime) Mr Ujjwal Mishra told UNI here today the situation in the troubld areas of South Goa was absolutely normal with no untoward incident reported. Nobody had so far been taken into custody in connection with last week's vandalism against the minority community in six cases filed against the miscreants. The peace committee constituted by the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) under the leadership of Panchayat Raj Minister Subhash Shirodkar convened an all community meeting at Shiroda after visiting the affected areas of Curchorem, Sanvorden and other parts in South Goa today. This was said to be an attempt to restore confidence among the minorities and bring them back home as they fled from the disturbed areas last week. The state government was taking the legal opinion on demand both by the Congress and the BJP for instituting a judicial probe into the vandalism with both the parties blaming each other. It was also assessing the damage caused to the property of minorities to compensate them fully. The BJP blamed Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane of ''total failure of administrative machinery to prevent attack on minorities with the indulgence of outside forces.'' The Congress, including Union Minister of state for Home Shriprakash Jaiswal, accused the forces owing allegiance to the BJP, RSS and VHP responsible for fomenting the trouble and would be dealt with deterrently at different levels.
