RUMBLER STRIPS ON VERNA BYPASS: In view of the rise in motor vehicle accidents on the Verna bypass the district administration has decided to restrict the speed limited to 60 km per hour, besides constructing rumbler strips at five different locations. (GT) HYGIENE, SANITATION CODE FOR EATERIES: A 'Preferred Code of Practice' for hotels and eateries in Panjim has been drawn up by the Corporation of the City of Panaji which will ensure observance and adherence to norms on hygiene and sanitation conditions in all eating houses within a month from now. (H) GUIDELINES FOR FOOD HANDCARTS: The Food and Drug Administration and the Corporation of the City of Panaji are working on guidelines for hand-carts, gaddas and kiosks supplying food in open areas in Panjim city and all over the State which will be implemented shortly. (H) CITY WELL WATER UNFIT: A report from the Health Services has confirmed the water extracted by private tankers from the well near Church square is contaminated and unfit for human consumption. It may be recalled that four wells in Panjim have already been declared as contaminated with coliform organisms and private tankers extracting water from these wells and supplying the same to hotels and eateries had been directed to stop immediately. (H) ONE KILLED: Ramdas Shripad Bakhle, 70, a pujari of Vithal Mandir, Margao, died after the Maruti vehicle in which he was traveling rammed into a tree yesterday. The accident occurred at Bendolem, Balli, yesterday. (GT) TRAVEL GRANTS FOR WRITERS: The Kala Academy has decided to implement the scheme of travel grants for Konkani and Marathi writers from Goa. The scheme will enable Goan writers to acquaint themselves with writers and people from other regions. Under the scheme, KA will grant maximum Rs.4,000 each for one writer in Konkani and one in Marathi. (GT) ON-LINE LICENSES: Close on the heels of issuing on-line learner's licences for motor vehicles in the capital city, such licenses will now be issued all over the State shortly. With the new system, on-line learner's licences for motor vehicles will now be made available at the information kiosks on payment of Rs.40. The licence fee includes processing fees, cost of photographs and Xeroxing charges. (GT) MOIRA CONSUMER FORUM MEET: The Moira Civic and Consumer Forum will hold its meeting on September 10, at the Moira Club at 5.30 pm. (GT) SUNAPARANT TO BE RELAUNCHED: Sunaparant, the Konkani daily, will be relaunched as a full-fledged 40-page newspaper from 19 December this year. An announcement in this regard was made by Dattaraj Salgaocar, who has been running the newspaper since 1987, at a convention of Sunaparant Ixtt Parivar held in Margao recently. Sandesh Prabhudesai will take over as the editor of Sunaparant from 19 December. It will also shift its base from Margao to Panaji.
