the workforce, particularly from Orissa, the boat owners are camping near
the railway station. The moment a train arrives at the station and a
familiar Oriya is spotted around, he is picked-up, put in a vehicle and
driven straight to the jetties. As reported by Herald earlier, the
mechanised fishing industry is wholly dependent on the outside labour force,
which is put up at around 15,000. While the labour comes from the coastal
region of Karnataka, the new entrants in the market is the cheap labour
coming from the coastal areas of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. (H)

BETTERMENT OF DOWNTRODDEN: Like any other kid, he too enjoyed playing with
friends, but his hobbies took a different shape .He enjoyed making toy
temples, palanquins and other religious artifacts. He found great delight in
reading religious books and even coaxed his friends to do the same. Even
though he grew up in Margao, the commercial hub of the State, the young boy
was to transcend worldly goods and came to be revered as PP Parwadeshwar
Maharaj, founder of over 140 muths all over India and with a growing
following in America and Africa. Born at Shenviwada in Shiroda, his family
soon shifted to Margao to run their business in that city. (H)

ROOFTOP RAIN HARVESTING: Fortunately, rains have been more than adequate
this season but has the water gone down the drain again? One government
department is of the view that rain water harvesting may not be very
successful in Goa and that the "traditional" methods like constructing
'bandharas' besides small dams, etc, will take care of the problem. Dr
Chachadi is totally for rooftop rain harvesting. He says urban areas
including cities and towns occupying both plateau slopes and areas in the
coastal belt should go for rooftop rain water harvesting to overcome water
shortage problem. Rooftop rain harvesting should be made mandatory to be
successful in Goa, suggested Dr Chachadi. (H)

RAPE ACCUSED GRANTED BAIL: The Assistant Sessions Judge has granted bail to

that from 1999 to May 2002 that accused had raped her in the house where she

Irrigation Department. Sources added that last year the overall rainfall

RANE REBUKES DR WILLY: The Opposition Leader, Pratapsing Rane, has strongly
objected to Dr de Souza quoting his statement made on the floor of the last
budget session of Goa assembly. Dr de Souza had said yesterday "Mr Rane even
told on the floor of the House, that he (Mr Rane) would not allow PWD
minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar's efforts to destabilise the government

complaints of overflowing sewerage chambers and apprehensions of
contamination of water supply lines to restaurants. In many cases, according
to the Commissioner of the CCP Sanjit Rodrigues, food waste is being flushed
into sewerage chambers resulting in clogging of chambers. (H)

AWARENESS NEEDED TO CURB MALARIA: Migration of people from villages to
towns, the emerged fast food revolution, increased use of plastic bags,
wraps and pet bottles, increasing construction activities, migration of
labourers from other states, unnoticed slums, etc are the by-products of
urbanisation which create breeding grounds for mosquitoes resulting in the
spread of malaria. A massive awareness is needed about the disease and to
keep the premises clean and to take good sanitary measures. (NT)

REMEDIAL TEACHING: A delegation of All Goa Secondary School Teachers
Association (AGSSTA) called on the director of education, Mr Ashok Dessai,
on Friday, and registered their protest against the recent circular issued
by the education department for implementation of remedial teaching in
schools. The delegation pointed out that "the Rule 14 provided extra
coaching for slow learners and weaker students. Unfortunately the

GOAN HISTORY: TO EACH HIS OWN: If tourism is one of the major lifelines of
Goan economy, then history is its soul, one can safely say. However, the
soul is distorted to a great extent, over the years, for the convenience of
those who reveal it to others. The Archaeological Survey of India,
Department of Archaeology and Archives, Department of Tourism, hoards of
illiterate and untrained tourist guides and above all, the self-professed
'historians', all of them have their fair share in misinforming on Goa's
heritage and history. The tendency to blindly follow what is available on
coffee-table tourism books and avoid cross-checking of facts have made the
Goan tourist spots and monuments lose the history linked to them and at the
same time, acquire newly derived accounts which are clearly far from the
truth. (Ramnath Raikar in NT)
