DAIRY FARMING, SUBSIDY FOR UNEMPLOYED: CM Manohar Parrikar has announced two schemes-one to generate self-employment among the youth and the other to boost dairy farming in the State. Announcing the schemes on the occasion of the Independence Day, the chief minister said that realising the vast potential the animal husbandry sector offers, his government has formulated schemes to involve the common man into dairy farming. While Goa's milk production is around 1-1.25 lakh litres per day, about 1.5 lakh litres of milk are imported daily into Goa, along with other milk products. (H) HELP GOVT MAKE GOA A MODEL STATE: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, has sought people's co-operation of the government efforts to transform Goa into a 'model' state in the country, while delivering his address after unfurling the national tricolour outside the State Secretariat. (NT) FOUR DROWN OFF SOUTH GOA COAST: A tragedy struck a Mumbai-based Colaco family (from Chorao) on Independence Day, when their two minor daughters Natasha (9) and Abigail (7) met with a watery grave at Colva beach. The two children were playing in ankle deep waters. Since it started drizzling, the parents signaled the children to move towards the beach. Within seconds, however, they realized that the children did not follow them and disappeared.A 25-year-old man from Bangalore drowned off Cavelossim beach. Another tourist from Hyderabad met with a watery grave off Palolem on Saturday morning. (H) AITUC'S DHARNA AGAINST SC VERDICT: The workers under the banner of All India Trade Union Congress staged half-day dharnas near the Customs House, Panaji, on Independence Day, to protest against the recent Supreme Court judgement which declared that "The government employees had no fundamental legal, moral or equitable right to go on strike even for a just cause." (WE-GT) SODIEM ROAD TO COST RS.86.04 LAKH: Independence Day function was celebrated at the VP Siolim-Sodiem with Savio Messias, Goa Football Association secretary, unfurling the flag. Dr Jawaharlal Henriques, Sarpanch, urged the public to help the less fortunate members of the community. He said that the hot mixing of the Sodiem main road would be taken up in November costing Rs.86.04 lakh. Henriques thanked Dayanand Mandrekar, Siolim MLA and Agricultural Minister, for showing keen interest in the development work of the village. (WE-GT) GOAN SEAMEN COVERED UNDER MEDICAL SCHEME: There is good news in store for the 30,000-odd Goan seafarers, working in the merchant navy. As per a medical scheme announced by the National Union of Seafarers of India, all working seamen and their families will get reimbursement for major surgeries or operations that have been performed on or after June 1, 2003. (H) KRC SPECIAL TRAINS DURING CHATURTHI: Konkan Railway will have special trains during the Ganesh festival. The specials will be run from Mumbai Central (901 DN) on 27th and 29 August, 2nd, 5th and 9th September, and from Margao (902 UP) on 28th and 30th August, 3rd, 6th and 10th September. The special train in Goa, will halt at Pernem, Tivim and Karmali stations. (WE-GT) BOMB SCARE ON KONKAN KANYA: For passengers traveling by the Mumbai-bound Konkan Kanya Express train, it was yet another delay journey on the Konkan Railway tracks on Independence Day on Friday. This time, however, it was not due to any landslide or boulders but a purported "bomb" threat, which later turned out to be a hoax. (H) MALAR "BONDERAM" TODAY: Even as "Bonderam" comes to the Malar, the leeward part of the Divar island today, Malarkars claim they are not Divarkars. Sao Mathias village panchayat as the self-governing body which covers Malar, Naroa and a small island, Vanxim, as part of its, has three churches, three chapels and two temples. The Malar fiesta is projected as the more traditional one. "We don't do it for competition and prizes," says a resident, Mario Fernandes, "It is a spontaneous festival." (WE-GT) LAKE WILL DEVELOP MALA: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar laid the foundation stone for the beautification of Mala Lake in the presence of Corporation of the City of Panaji mayor, Ashok Naik, at Mala on Friday. Parrikar said that a two-phase Rs.5 crore project will make development of the Mala as well as a recreational spot for locals and tourists. The gift has become a reality with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government and National Insurance Company. (WE-GT) 'SOLAR' SHRIMPS DISAPPEARING: It's not even a week now since mechanised fishing began on August 11, but the much-sought after prized 'solar' shrimp appears to be fast disappearing. Indeed, after a good harvest of the shrimp for the first three days-the catch rough put up over 600 to 700 tonnes, it's sardines all the way for the mechanised vessels daily. (H) BUFFALO GIVES BIRTH TO TWO CALVES: In one of the rare cases, a buffalo gave birth to two calves in Cuncolim in the wee hours of Saturday. This rare event happened at Nainem in Cuncolim in the cowshed of dairy farmer Surendra Govind Dessai.
