(GT) KTC SUSPENDS SERVICES TO BANGALORE: The state-owned Kadamba Transport Corporation yesterday temporarily suspended its services to Bangalore in Karnataka for three days in view of the stoning of its bus near Bangalore over the eviction of people, including Kannadigas, at Baina in Vasco. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure, official sources said. However, buses of the Karnataka State Transport Corporation are operating as usual. (NT) EROSION THREATENS SUNSET BEACH: Betalbatim's sandy coastline dotted with casuarinas draws hordes of local picnickers. (GT) ALL IS NOT WELL IN PHARMACY COLLEGE: Everything seems to be going the wrong way for this erstwhile 'Escola Cirurgica de Goa' re-christened in 1963 as Goa College of Pharmacy, right from the reduction in the number of seats for B Pharm course from 60 to 45 to the refusal of the Goa University in approving the appointment of the present principal of the institution, Dr SC Marihal, either as a principal or a professor. To make matters worse, it is learnt that the All India Council for Technical Education had passed critical strictures in its report against the institution. (NT) ENGLISH SCORES A LOW: The recently declared results of the SSC examination has unveiled a predicament over the performance of students in the English language subject. Many schools have been lamenting that even their brilliant students have not secured more than 60 per cent marks in this subject. (H) BUS OWNERS DEMAND FARE HIKE: The Goa Bus Owners Association yesterday reiterated the demand for a hike in bus fares following increase in prices of petrol and diesel. The GBOA has demanded a fare of Rs.4 for the first four kilometers and 40 paise for every subsequent kilometer. (GT) SAD DEMISE OF PRABHAKAR ANGLE: Noted economist and industrialist Prabhakar Angle died after a brief illness at his residence on June 22. He was 81. Affectionately called "Pobuanna", Angle was the president of Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1989 to 1991 and former chairman of the Kala Academy. Angle is survived by wife and son Vivek Angle. The funeral procession will leave his residence on June 23 at 4 pm. A graduate of Portuguese Lyceum and of the Bombay University, Angle was well versed in economic matters and commanded great esteem in the trade circles in Goa. He was an active participant in cultural activities. "BICHOLIM PLUS" LAUNCHED: "Bicholim Plus", a monthly tabloid highlighting local issues in Bicholim and surrounding areas which is published by Diamond Publications, Panjim, was launched recently by Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar. (H) HOUSEWIFE COMMITS SUICIDE: A 22-year-old housewife and the mother of a 3-year-old child allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself to a rafter of their rented house near the petrol pump at Caranzalem in the wee hours of June 22. (NT) WOMAN SUCCUMBS TO BURN INJURIES: A 23-year-old housewife from Fatorpa died yesterday after setting herself ablaze. The Cuncolim police informed that the victim went to the toilet and later poured kerosene on herself before setting herself ablaze. Police disclosed that the incident occurred two year after marriage and further investigations are in progress. (NT) MAN SUCCUMBS TO FALL FROM TREE: Mariano Cardozo (73) from Cutbona, who had sustained injuries on the spinal cord after he fell down from the steps of his house on June 12, succumbed to his injuries at the GMC. (NT) DRIVE AGAINST ILLEGAL HAWKERS: Hawkers occupying spaces on both sides of the road at the Mapusa municipal market faced the ire of the authorities as platforms, steel cots and plastic sheds erected by them for displaying their wares were razed to the ground by the Mapusa Municipal Council authorities yesterday.
