The police are baffled by the two acts of vandalism and are keeping a vigil in the village but denied that there was tension there. (GT)
PENDSE PANEL GETS EXTENSION: The State cabinet yesterday granted another four months extension to the one-man Justice Pendse Commission probing the irregularities during the one-day international cricket match played at Fatorda Stadium on 6 April 2001. (GT) MASHELKAR FOR GREATER INVESTMENT: Council for Scientific and Industrial research Director-General, Dr RA Mashelkar, urged for greater investment in R and D by the private sector, as 'India was the only country where government was still funding 80 per cent of research and development'. (GT) LETHARGIC FUNCTIONING OF GOVT OFFICES: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday summoned senior officials from Mapusa, consisting of Deputy Collector, Additional Rent Controller, Mamlatdars, all joint mamlatdars, chief office of the Mapusa Municipal Council, Block Development Officer, Sub Division Police office and Mapusa Police Inspector at the government complex building, to assess the functioning of government offices in Mapusa, specially the deputy collector's office and the mamlatdar's office in view of complaints that both the offices were in a mess, with the general public being the most affected. (H) LPG TO COST MORE: Government yesterday increased the distributor's commission on domestic cooking gas by 38 paise on a 14.2 kg cylinder and by 20 paise on a five kg cylinder, resulting in an equivalent increase in the prices of the fuel. Also, petrol and diesel will cost less in coastal areas than inland locations if Petroleum Minister Ram Naik approves a differential pricing policy based on the cost of transportation of the fuel from the nearest port to the sale point. (H) UPBEAT TOURISM INDUSTRY: Ever since the authorities decided that Goa should be the permanent venue for holding the International Film Festival of India, the tourism industry in the State is upbeat, and is seeing this as an event to further promote the state as a touristic destination with world class facilities. Faleiro said their request had been turned down during the Congress rule as only those who have been declared legally insolvent or living in conditions of poverty are eligible. (H) MEDICINES FROM MUSSELS: National Institute of Oceanography and some other scientists have reported encouraging finds by using peptides in green mussels (xinnanneo), which incidentally are more powerful than the protein content, in treating malaria, osteoporosis and HIV. Mussels, which have contributed to sustenance fishery in Goa due to their availability for most part of the year, are known to have curative and prophylactic properties. After an amazing find by Russian scientists in 1969, it was noticed that mussels have anti-viral properties, effective for cure of diseases like herpes, hepatitis, influenza, etc. (GT) SHORTAGE OF TALATHIS: The Quepem Mamlatdar's office which serves as the headquarters to a number of village panchayats, lacks the services of the required talathis in the panchayats. (H) TRANSPORT DEPT REVENUE: The Directorate of Transport has collected a revenue of Rs.20 crore during the first five months of the current financial year. The average monthly collection from all over Goa has now increased to Rs.4 crore. (GT) KONKANI SANGEET, NATAK AKADEMI opening: The Konkani Sangeet and Natak Akademi will be formally instituted on September 27 at 5.30 pm at the hands of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at the Kala Academy in Panjim. The Akademi has been primarily formed to enhance Goan theatre, music, folk music and administration. The function will be followed by a two-hour capsule of music, dance and theatre by maestro Fr Peter Cardozo. (H) DANIEL PEARL PEACE CONCERT: Journalist Ethel da Costa is putting together a free concert called the 'Daniel Pearl Peace Concert' in the spirit of Daniel Pearl, South Asia Bureau Chief of Wall Street Journal, who was kidnapped and murdered by militants in Pakistan, while sourcing a story. The open air peace concert is scheduled for 10 October at the Panjim Municipal Garden from 6 pm until midnight. With the concert Goa joins the rest of the world to celebrate musical event 'Harmony for Humanity'. (GT) "RESTORE HERITAGE" CARAMBOLIM CHURCH: The ancient church of St John the Baptist in Carambolim, Ilhas, is now left in a very sad state of affairs. Today it would take at least Rs.1 crore to carry out repairs to the facade, the walls, the floor, the Bell Tower, etc. The Carambolim church committee, under the leadership of the parish priest, Fr Lino de Sa, has decided to undertake the repairs, and has made a special appeal to the co-parishioners who have migrated overseas, or are living in various parts of Goa, to come forward and help in preserving the village heritage. Besides a 30-second interview the BBC crew had with her, as part of research on the works of David Bailey, will be telecast on BBC's television channel.
