DUBAI: Raia edged past Holiday Club Arpora by a
solitary goal to enter the quarter-finals while
Dramapur made an early exit going down to Old Goa 4-0
in the second-round matches of the Pehla Cup all Goa
inter-village football tournament being played at
Irani Club Dubai.
Old Goa scored through Moses Lobo (14th minute) Tony
Peter Fernandes (20th), Freddy Pereira (28th) and
Edwin Nunes (32nd).
Mario Quadros scored the match winner for Raia on the
stroke of half-time.
Old Goa, who had lost their first match to Pilar by a
solitary goal, put themselves in contention for a
place in the last eight with a convincing win over
Dramapur.
Dramapur have themselves to blame as they conceded all
goals through defensive lapses. Moses Lobo shot home
Old Goa's first from close range after a Jude
clearance came straight at the striker's feet.
Dramapur keeper Jeronio fumbled with a collection in
the 20th minute and Tony Peter Fernandes lurking
around tapped the ball home.
Crossing over Jeronio effected some smart saves, once
tipping over a Joaquim header for an abortive corner.
But he could not prevent Old Goa from adding two more.
Freddy Pereira added an insurance goal in the 28th
minute and Edwin Nunes rounded off the rout eight
minutes from end.
Nunes received the Citizen watch after being named man
of the match.
The second match could have gone either way but Raia
got their winner on the stroke of half-time when Mario
Quadros headed home captain Victor's flag-kick. Arpora
tried their best to restore parity but the equaliser
eluded them. Arpora will now hope Raia can beat FC
Siolim on giving them a chance to defeat pointless
Anjuna and go through.
The tournament is organised by All Star Entertainment
in association with United Goans. The 16-team
tournament, sponsored by Pehla and Citizen, is also
supported by UAE Xchange Abu Dhabi, Emirates Flight
Catering, Jet Airways, Oasis Pure Drinking Water, Gulf
Ocean, Refrigerate Equipment, Al Rubaiya,
Vanxim-Divar, Clipsal and Otis.
The round-robin matches continue till Nov. 3 with the
quarters to be played from Nov. 5-8. The semi-finals
are scheduled for Nov. 11-12 with the final fixed for
Nov. 19.
Victor Fernandes of Raia was named the man of the
match. Arpora captain John Pereira was cautioned by
referee Hasanpour for dissent. The referee pulled up
Raia keeper Clete Fernandes for a foul which did not,
however, look like an infringement. Clete cleared the
ball without wasting much time, and was surprised when
referee blew the whistle for an infringement.
