MLAs ask Sonia to reinstate Goa govt
By EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

Congress MLAs from Goa led by former chief minister Pratapsinh Rane met party president Sonia Gandhi at her Parliament House office today to request the restoration of their government.

The Centre had placed Goa under President's Rule on March 4, while keeping the Assembly under suspended animation, to end a month-long tussle for power between the Congress and BJP.

Rane, who was accompanied by senior party leader Eduardo Faleiro, told reporters that the 22-member delegation, including 18 MLAs, told Sonia that ''we have a majority in the Assembly.''

Rane declined comment when asked if he thought the imposition of President's Rule was a mistake after he had won the confidence vote in the Assembly.

However, the Congress High Command promptly distanced itself from the state leaders' drive. Congress spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters in reply to questions that the party respected the decision placing Goa under President's Rule.

Sharma said it was for the state's governor to review the situation and take an appropriate view whether a stable government was possible or not.
