Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen). Goanet founder Herman Carneiro will be there. See you there! ------------------------------
In response to Gilbert, I suggest that expats, migrants could be the alternatives. The Portuguese use "emigrantes" for the many thousands of Portuguese settled in France, USA, Switzerland, South Africa, etc. I agree with Filomena Giese and Bernado Colaço that large numbers of Goans, both Hindus and Christians too (as in the case of Mangalorean Goans who moved out because of imposition of western food and dress habits following conversion) moved out because of Inquisition in the 16th-18th centuries. Possibly, some moved out of Goa after 1961 regarding the integration of Goa into India as "invasion". But neither of these reasons permit a blanket use of "diaspora" for all Goan migrants. I would not include myself in "diaspora , and there must be many others who moved out voluntarily. To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The dispersion of the Jews because of persecution is indeed one of the meanings of "diaspora." But the word is used for any group of people of a commmon national origin or belief who have been dispersed or scattered because of exile, migration, or other factors. In the case of Goans incidentally, Hindu Goans were persecuted and went into exile under the Portuguese Inquisition. The scattering of Goans around the globe for whatever reason can be described as the Goan diaspora. In regard to Goans living overseas and especially soon after the invasion of Goa in 1961 I wonder what would be the category. Diaspora? Expats? Migrats?
