Pavan K Varma's new book on Being Indian (2005) published byHeineman and referred to in a big spread by him in the Sunday Times on 13/3/05should prove to be quite provocative, especially with statements re the Indians, like "they are a pragmatic people, naturally amoral in their outlook. There is no notion of ultimate sin in Hinduism."

My initial reaction to his article is not to agree with some of his generalisations, and especially, his title of the book when I think he
really focuses on Hindus rather than Indians per se. I can't wait to get hold of
the book. Incidentally, I understand that Pavan Varma is the Head of the Nehru Centre in London.
