GOA-NIZAMUDDIN EXPRESS DERAILS: Passengers traveling in the New Delhi-bound
2779 Goa-Nizamuddin Express train had a miraculous escape as six bogies of
the train derailed near Adarki in Satara district of Maharashtra early
yesterday. However, there was no casualty in the mishap. (GT)

GOANS TO GET A RARE GLIMPSE OF EDC STATUS: They may call the paper white,
black, yellow or saffron in colour, but Goans would get a rare opportunity
later this week to know the factual position vis-a-vis the status of the
Economic Development Corporation. And, as the EDC has suddenly become the
focal point of both the Congress and the BJP at the ongoing block-level
party conventions, two "white papers" are now in the offing - one, an
official document compiled by the government and the other by Goa Pradesh
Congress Committee President, Luizinho Faleiro. (H)

CUTBONA COMES BACK TO LIFE: After a two-month break in activity, the Cutbona
fishing jetty - South Goa fishing hub came to life on Sunday, on the eve of
the commencement of the fishing season, beginning from Monday (Aug 11)
morning. A number of trawlers and other small-sized mechanised boats lay
anchored at the jetty after undergoing last minute maintenance work at the
workshops at Mobor on the other side of River Sal. A few vessels took a
trial in the calm waters of the river to ensure that everything works well.
A fleet of 180 trawlers are scheduled to leave Cutbona jetty at 6 am on
Monday, while hundreds more will venture out to the sea from other fishing
jetties in the State. (H)

CSE DISSOCIATES FROM COKE, PEPSI BASHING: The CSE completely dissociates
itself from the kind of action being resorted to by certain groups across
the country who are smashing and burning bottles of Coke and Pepsi and even
calling for a ban. "We have consistently maintained, it is not Coke per se
and Pepsi per se that are to blame. It is the lack of government
regulations," states a CSE prepress note. (GT)

TRAINING OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT COMPLAINTS' COMMITTEE: A new phase of the
campaign towards a sexual harassment-free workplace began with the
inauguration of a series of workshops planned to train and interact with
complaints' committees set up to deal with sexual harassment in employment
as visualised by the Vishakha Judgement of the Supreme Court. The workshop
which was organised by Bailancho Saad along with Goa State Commission for
Women witnessed the active participation of around 80 members of complaints
committees of various educational institutions from different parts of Goa.

KARNATAKA GOVT TO PENALISE GOAN MOTORISTS: So you're proud that your vehicle
has dazzling high-beam headlights that can blind the eyes of vehicles in the
opposite direction. That's all right in Goa but venturing into Karnataka
with such gadgets may land you in the dragnet of the law enforcing agencies
and a fine of Rs 200. It is learnt that the Karnataka High Court had felt
that the use of high-beam headlights was a cause of concern, as it had led
to many accidents and had issued instructions to the law enforcing agencies
to bring a halt to this hazard. (H)

TREE CHOPPED AT MINISTER'S BEHEST:  A tree, which was opposite the
Veterinary Hospital and belonging to the CCP, was cut down, sans permission,
at St Inez-Tonca, yesterday afternoon, allegedly at the behest of a
minister. (GT)

POLICE NEED TO BE POLITE: Journalist Shyam Zambaulikar has underlined the
need for policemen to imbibe the qualities of honesty, politeness and
loyalty to gain confidence of the public. Delivering a talk here on the
expectations of public from the police, Zambaulikar said the virtues of
honesty, obedience, efficiency will keep a policemen in good stead. "With
these qualities, not only will the image of the police improve, but will
make every policemen a successful person", he added. (H)

FOREFRONT FOR "BONDERAM": The harvest festival commonly known as "Bonderam"
will be celebrated on 17 August beginning at 4 pm, at St Mathias, Divar
island. The festival is more than 450 years old. Local band "The Outsiders",
led by Elvis Vaz, will be followed by one of India's top bands "Forefront".

TELI GRILLED AT POLICE-PUBLIC INTERACTION: Additional Superintendent of
Police (Traffic) Apa Teli was grilled by citizens of Panjim, during the
police-public interaction meet at the Mahalaxmi temple hall on Sunday
morning. Some of the newer issues, apart from the usual one associated with
the police during such meets, dealt with the police preference for shoddy
panch witnesses, who either have infamous histories or turn hostile.  (H)

PLAN TO HOODWINK KRC FOILED: Shyam Kumar Chauhan from Indore, Madhya
Pradesh, approached the railway authorities claiming that his brother
Shanker Lal Chauhan was a victim of train mishap that occurred at Rajapur on
22 June 2003, to claim the ex-gratia for his deceased brother. Armed with a
letter from the local MLA in Indore and a No Objection Certificate from the
wife of the deceased, Chauhan turned up the Margao railway station. Chauhan'
s deceitful plan lay exposed after the railway police in Indore informed
their Goa counterparts that the brother of the accused had expired three
years ago. (GT)

BUTCHERS HELD: Two butchers were raided by the Animal Husbandry department
at Navelim for illegally slaughtering and selling beef. The duo Aron Bepari
and Yakub Bepari were arrested with the assistance of the Margao police
station personnel. A chopper, along with some dressing and skinning knives
were also seized from the accused. Meat which had been cached after
slaughtering of two bulls was also destroyed in the presence of police
personnel. The meat was to be taken to a cold storage owned by one Babush at
Sanvordem. (H)

ASSOLNA HIGH MAST UP, BUT WITH LIGHTS DOWN: After having resigned to their
fate on the frequent power interruptions, Assolna villagers have to be
content with an unusual thing, again connected with the power department.
The nearly rupees five-lakh high mast lamp erected on the church square,
in-between the Christ the King statue and the church premises no doubt
stands erect, but with the lights down. It's not just days but four months
since the villagers found the lights down on the high mast. (H)

TO REVIVE DEAD PHONES: If your 'dead' phone does not come alive inspite of
filing complaints for the same, snap the entire cable of the exchange and
your phone will start ringing almost immediately. This was exactly what was
done by Pale villagers to, literally, bridge their communication gap. (GT)

SAMUDRA PUJA: Minister for Fisheries Ramkrishna Dhavlikar will perform
"Samudra Puja" on the occasion of Narali Pournima at Fisheries Jetty,
Panaji, at 12 noon today and thereafter commission the newly provided
electrification and illumination at Fisheries Complex, Malim-Batim, at 7 pm.

JAY REIGNS IN GOA'S RICE FIELDS: As the quest for more high-yielding rice
varieties continues, the "tried and tested" Jaya is becoming hard to
dislodge from the Goa's plate. For around two decades now, this trusted
variety has sated the Goan palate. Most other varieties, introduced with

TOURISTS AT SELAULIM DAM SORE: The picturesque Selaulim dam is indeed an
enlightening experience, provided one visits the site during sunlight.
Tourists visiting the famed Selaulim dam are sore over the non-functioning
of the streetlights leading to the dam. (H)

RUBY CELEBRATIONS AT ST XAVIER'S: Students at St Xavier's college, Mapusa,
were exhorted to build a set of values for themselves to follow by Dr Bailon
D'Sa, who was addressing the students at the inauguration of the Ruby
Jubilee celebrations of the College on August 9. (GT)

HURT IN ANMOD GHAT MISHAP: Five persons, including two truck drivers, were
seriously injured in a mishap at the Anmod Ghat late Friday night. Police
said the mishap took place as the two trucks (KA-28-9092) and (KA-32-9029)
were both proceeding towards Goa via the Anmod Ghat. The second truck dashed
against the first truck, as a result of which, the first truck rammed into a
hillock. Driver Nazir Kalal (29), Bandenawaz Maula (28) and Dondappa (25) of
the first truck as well as the driver of the second truck Krishna Kori (25)
and cleaner Basavraj (25) sustained injuries. (H)

RECRUITMENT IN ENGG COLLEGE: After a gap of about three years, recruitment
to the faculty positions at the Goa College of Engineering will recommence
this academic year, where in addition to the existing 20 odd vacancies,
around 20 new posts have been created. Recruitment to the Goa College of
Engineering, Farmagudi will start in full swing this year - following the
recent notification of the Recruitment Rules. Round about the year 2000, the
All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) had recommended that the
recruitment rules be modified in a move towards upgrading the college. (H)

TO WIN GLOBAL HONOURS: Distinguished Konkani writer, thinker and a Gandhain,
Ravindra Kelekar, advised Konkani writers to think big and aim high to the
extent of attempting to win international honours like the Nobel. He was
speaking at a valedictory function of a national seminar on books at the
Kala Academy on August 9. (H)
