GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS 18 Sep 2003 TWO MORE PERISH ON VERNA BY-PASS: Two persons, Santosh Salelkar (44) of Margao and Hussein Shaikh (13), died on the spot while Santosh's son, Mangirish (13) and two others injured in road accident involving five vehicles on the Verna by-pass on September 17. Around 1.15 pm Santosh from Colva was driving his son for a cricket coaching camp at Panaji. En route he gave Hussein and Rahul Bandekar (14), both students of Agnel Ashram, a lift. After Santosh got on to the Verna bypass the car suddenly swerved and crashed into an oncoming tanker. Following the collision the tanker driver lost control and hit the second car driven by advocate Sandra Correia with her husband Savio and father-in-law Philip in it. They received light injuries. The tanker than hit a Vespa scooter and a Hero Honda motorcycle driven by Lino Fernandes, Chandor. (GT)
CM HINTS AT FLYOVER: There is a possibility of a flyover being constructed to ease traffic congestion at the capital's entry points, claimed Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, at a Panjim constituency workers meeting on September 17. The Chief Minister hinted at the possibility, claiming that with the International Film Festival of India being hosted in Panjim, the problem of traffic chaos at entry-points would have to be resolved either by building a flyover or some other means. (H) CENTRAL'S APPROVAL SOUGHT FOR MOPA AIRPORT: The State government has sough the Central government approval for signing the agreement with the International Civil Aviation Organisation for a techno-feasibility report. CM Manohar Parrikar has taken up the matter with Union Ministry for Civil Aviation Rajiv Pratap Rudy and the approval is expected shortly. (GT) GOVERNMENT HELP TO HOTELIERS: The Goa Hotel and Restaurant Association president, Mr Prakash Naik, yesterday said that authorities had agreed to provide subsidy for training hotel staff in maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in the hotel as well as personnel at the Institute of Hotel Management and catering Technology. Benaulim ZP member Kennedy Alemao was among the noted persons seated among the audience in the front row. Around 90 per cent of the audience comprised of Christian OBC women, who were one time staunch supporters of the Congress. He dubbed Mr Faleiro's statement as "ridiculous" and based on faulty figures. (NT) GOOF-UPS IN SCIENCE LAB MANUAL: After mistakes in school text books, now there are goof-ups in the Science Laboratory Manual for Std VIII and IX prepared by the Goa Board which have irked secondary school science teachers to the core. Page 67 of the manual circulated four months behind schedule is handwritten, with diagrams barely visible on account of poor printing. There is miss-match of diagrams in the very first experiment enlisted in the manual. (GT) LITERARY WORKS OF NASCIMENTO MENDONCA: The eminent scientist and educationist, Dr Bailon de Sa, while delivering a lecture on "Nascimento Mendonca: Through the mythical Ayodya", said that Mendonca was the greatest Goan poet, who wrote Portuguese poetry. Delivering the lecture in the Indo-Portuguese literature and poetry series at the Fundacao Oriente, Dr de Sa said that Adeodato Barreto and Paulin Dias were other celebrated Goan poets who wrote best of Portuguese poems. In another match played at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, a solitary goal scored by their ace striker Dudu Omagbemi against Vasco SC placed Haywards Sporting Club at the top of the Pro League table with 13 points.
