FONTAINHAS REVITALISATION PROJECT: The State government has initiated a project looking at a comprehensive approach towards conservation, development and upgradation of the living environment in heritage precincts, the first of which includes Fontainhas. After a recent Festival of Arts and a spruce up of the precinct, a more concrete proposal has been submitted to the government for revitalising Fontainhas which has been long forgotten in terms of development after it was declared a conservation zone in 1974. (H) EX-SARPANCH, GOVT STAFF BOOKED: A former sarpanch of Navelim, two government officials and a PWD contractor have been booked by the Crime Branch under the Prevention of Corruption Act and also for cheating case. The accused ex-sarpanch Schubert Furtado, M S Naik and F X L Ferrao (both BDO officials) and Shubhiraj Naik have been booked for duping the exchequer of Rs 88,000 by misappropriating government funds. (H) "WRONGLY PROJECTED 1000-DAY ACHIEVEMENT": The achievements of 1000 days of the Bharatiya Janata Party government are wrongly projected by the Chief Minister through media, said the ex-MP and former president of Goa Pradesh Congress committee, Mr Shantaram Naik. Considering the cases of murders, robberies, dacoities, thefts and extortions, which have taken place in the last 1000 days, one wonders whether there exists a 'good governance' in the state, he added. (NT) ON-LINE LOTTERY BOOM: After its successful launch in Kerala and West Bengal, Fortune Online Lottery, the government of Nagaland's foray into the online lottery business has now geared up for its Maharashtra launch with Goa featuring prominently in its expansion plans. The company aims at a slew of retailer campaigns to notch up close to 100 retailers in the Goa market. (GT) MIXED RESPONSE TO PENSION PLAN: The central government's newly launched Varishta Bima Yojana has evoked lukewarm response from most of the senior citizens in the state. They feel that the benefits of the scheme are far less compared to the other existing schemes. The pension scheme, to be executed by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and other national insurance companies, would be aided by the government. The policyholders would have to pay only a rupee per day for getting themselves insured. (NT) CONSERVATION ZONE: BOON OR BANE? It is often said that a walk down the Abade Faria road or the Holy Spirit Church square, further down to Borda takes one back to Margao's architectural heritage.All these 50-odd houses - right from the starting point of Abade Faria road, just behind Gomant Vidya Niketan to the Old market area and a part of Borda, fall under the Conservation zone.What has, however, caused concern is the fact that many of these old structures are just lying in shambles, literally making them an eye-sore. (H) PILLION RIDER KILLED IN MISHAP: A 35-year old pillion rider died in a road mishap, when a car and a motorcycle collided with each other at Paithona in Salvador do Mundo on Wednesday night. Porvorim police said the mishap took place at about 9.30 pm, as a Maruti car was proceeding to Paithona to Ambirna-Socorro. The car collided with an oncoming Hero Honda motorcycle (GA-03-A-2679). The motorcycle rider Sebastiao D'Costa (27) and pillion rider Sebastiano Antao (35) sustained severe injuries and were moved to GMC, Bambolim. Antao however succumbed to injuries on Thursday morning. (H) GOVT TO SUPPORT GLRES SCHEMES: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar said the government would actively support the schemes run by the Goa Labour Recruitment and Employment Society (GLRES), for the benefit of the contract labourers. Speaking during the general body meeting of the GLRES, Mr Parrikar further said that efforts should be made by the society to provide satisfactory salary besides other facilities to the contract labourers. (NT) STATUE STOLEN: Burglars decamped with an art statue, valued around Rs 40,000, which was kept in the garden of one S Kakar of Benaulim. In this connection, Kakar, who had purchased the house has lodged a police complaint today stating that the incident must have occurred after July 15 and that he noticed the statue missing today. (H) DEATH OF YOUTH AT ESI HOSPITAL: The government has ordered a high level inquiry into the death of 26 year old, Ganpati Keni, who had died at the Margao-based ESI hospital a month ago. A three-member panel of doctors of Goa Medical College, Bambolim are expected to conduct the probe, sources said. The commission of inquiry is to complete the report within a month of its constitution. (H) STUDENTS FAIL TO GET MA EXAM PAPERS: The Registrar of Goa University, Dr Jayant Budkuley, said that he is unaware of the incident wherein the students of St Xavier College, Mapusa, appearing for psychology subject at the MA examination, yesterday, did not receive the examination papers of the said subject.When contacted, Prof Newman Fernandes, Principal of St Xavier's college, Mapusa said that "the MA examination is conducted by the Goa University which depends on external staff for the same." (NT) CHINCHINIM FACING FREQUENT POWER CUTS: Once again residents of Chinchinim are crying foul over the frequent power failures in the village. Towards this end, the Chinchinim Citizens' Committee has dashed off a memorandum to local MLA and Minister for Water Resources, Filipe Neri Rodrigues pleading for regular power supply. The CCC contended that power supply has been disrupted since the last fortnight which has caused untold sufferings and miseries to the citizens. (H) NO RESPITE FOR PWD TANKER: Monsoon is at its peak and there is water gushing everywhere in Goa, but the PWD water tanker of Canacona PHE division has no respite as it has to supply water to many places in Canacona taluka despite the rains. One such place where the services of the PWD water tanker is called is at Outraband-Loliem and this service is being rendered since the last five years, though a pipeline scheme to supply potable water exists in this region to cater to the needs of over 100 houses. (H) "PARRIKAR'S ACT WILL BENEFIT CONGRESS": The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar's act of luring away the two MLAs from the United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) is an act of 'madness' which will severely damage the chances of the two BJP members of Parliament in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, according to the UGDP state president, Mr Srirang Narvekar. Talking to The Navhind Times, yesterday evening, Mr Narvekar also said that Mr Parrikar's act will greatly benefit the Congress and that it has already united the two warring factions of the MGP. (NT) MARGAO'S BYPASS BECOMES DUMPING YARD FOR PLASTICS: After construction debris, garbage and other waste, the eastern-bypass has now become ground for dumping of plastic waste. On Thursday, used plastic sheets were found dumped along the bypass. This heap of white plastic sheets drew instant attention of passers-bye, but not of the authorities. It could not be ascertained where the waste has come from, but the nature of the plastic sheets indicates that it is mostly used for wrapping textiles. (H) AGAINST COPYRIGHT VIOLATORS: The District Magistrate, south, has hinted of initiating stringent action against the Copyright Act and Cinematograph Act violators in the backdrop of it warning the owners of video libraries and cable operators. What seems to be a fallout of the dwindling theatre business coupled with requirement of latest facilities in the cinema halls, the film distributors had knocked the doors of Chief Minister, seeking his intervention. Sources disclosed that the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar has issued instructions to the authorities to check incidents of violations. (NT) DEADLINE FOR MARGAO'S BEAUTIFICATION: Margao city will wear a new look on August 15 as the state government today set a deadline till Independence Day for the beautification of all the traffic islands. This was decided after the Urban Development Minister, Mr Digamber Kamat today visited all the traffic islands supposed to be taken for beautification. On most of the islands, the work is yet to be started. Sources disclosed that the private parties who had volunteered to complete beautification work has been asked to do so by August 15. (NT) MYSTERY SHROUDS DEATH OF ACTRESS: Mystery shrouds the death of a Konkani film actress Anita Sawant, originally from Ratnagiri, whose body was found floating in the Zuari river at Dando, Agassaim on Monday. According to the police, Anita, 32, had married a boy from Ponda and was associated with the drama troupe Rangadhara even after her divorce.
