(H) WITHDRAW HIKE IN SHACK FEES: AGNELO: Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes yesterday demanded immediate withdrawal of the exorbitant hike in the licence fees of beach shacks and to maintain its total number in view of the high flow of tourists during the season. Agnelo expressed surprise over the Tourism department's decision to hike licence fees for the coming season from Rs.10,000 to Rs.50,000 and Rs.60,000 depending upon the prime locations. TO CURB FISH SPILLAGE: The government authorities yesterday directed owners of vehicles carrying fish from the Cutbona jetty to immediately implement the use of channel system and a can for collecting sludge. (NT) COLVALE SUBSCRIBERS CALL FOR PHONE DISCONNECTION: More than 250 subscribers from Colvale have applied for disconnection of telephones protesting against the steep hike in the monthly rentals and other tariffs. The subscribers have stated that on account of the exorbitant rise in telephone rentals and other tariffs the telephone bills have shot up. The subscribers have stated that if the rentals were restored to earlier levels they would ask for a re-connection. (H) DENGUE FEVER HITS NUVEM RESIDENT: A 38-year old resident of Nuvem was allegedly affected by dengue fever last week. Sources said the patient, F Diniz, who was admitted in a private hospital, has since recovered and has been discharged. They, however, clarified that patient had the classical dengue type and not haemorrhagic dengue. (H) WELL SURVEY KICKS UP A ROW: A row has erupted over the exact number of drinking water wells, including abandoned ones, in Salcete. While though it' s a known fact that most houses in the taluka do have a provision for drinking water well, a survey carried by the Salcete Mamlatdar's office in view of the outbreak of Jaundice in the Capital city Panjim, has revealed only 335 water wells in the 30 villages. The figure compiled by the authorities has raised serious queries, casting doubts on the authenticity of the drive. The figures for other villages is as follows: Benaulim (23), Curtorim (9), Margao (20), Cuncolim (11), Velim (4), Chinchinim (3), Varca (14), Verna (6), Nagoa (6), Raia (3), Utorda (11), Macazana (8), Paroda (9), Carmona (4), Assolna (5), Orlim (6), Loutolim (4), Rachol (3), Ambelim (10), Cavelossim (7) and Majorda (13). Meanwhile, the survey conducted by respective taluka Mamlatdars on drinking wells has compiled the following report on other talukas: Canacona - 1225, Quepem - 719, Sanguem - 674 and Mormugao - 903. (GT) ASSAGAO HONOURS HER VILLAGERS: The Village Panchayat of Assagao celebrated the first anniversary of its renovated Panchayat Ghar yesterday evening by felicitating four villagers, namely Bertha D'Souza (a teacher from Badem), Chintamani Kelkar (astrologist-writer), Joseph D'Souza (internet journalist) and Manohar Mandrekar (an efficient electrical linesman), at the hands of Manohar Azgaonkar, the Minister for Panchayats, who was the chief guest on the occasion. The guest of honour was local MLA and Minister for Agriculture Dayanand Mandrekar, and special invitee Sudin Natu, BDO of Bardez. Both the ministers were all praise to the efforts of the sarpanch Victor D'Souza and his team of sarpanchas for the tradition of honouring simple villagers for their endeavours. They also said that the panchayat ghar was one of the best in Goa, and promised to expedite the demand for a mahiti ghar and the sanction for the proposed water conservation project. Rodney D'Souza conducted the interesting function, which had the El-Shaddai students performing a small, entertaining cultural programme. Outstanding students from Assagao were also felicitated. 'MARRIAGE WITH DISABLED' SCHEME: Minister for Social Welfare, Ramrao Dessai, on Wednesday (24 September) disbursed cheques amounting to Rs.1.50 lakh to 10 disabled couples at a function organised at the conference hall, Secretariat, Panjim. An amount of Rs.15,000 to each couple was given under the 'Award for Marriage with Disabled Persons' scheme being implemented by the Directorate of Social Welfare. So far 150 disabled couples have availed of the benefit. (H) GOAN POETS FOR SHILLONG: The Sahitya Akademi has organised a poets' meet from the North East and West regions of India in Shillong, Meghalaya on September 26 and 27.
