George Menezes, who was always a great Goan passed away in Mumbai
yesterday. In 1984 he was nominated to the National Executive of the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by Atal Behari Vajpayee. But he soon quit the
saffron party in disgust. Below is an open letter he wrote to L.K.Advani.

I was shocked and saddened to read the news of George’s demise.
I and my late wife had known George and his late wife, to whom he referred as
‘old girl’, for many years.
We enjoyed a couple of meals with them, in Goa, and appreciated George’s very
funny sense of humour in ‘Goa Today’.

I'm saddened to hear of his passing, but we can celebrate his life and
literary achievement. We can 'see his star in heaven'. My late wife Germana
knew him as a friend from 'the days of their youth'.

Unfortunately the article lacks the history of women before 1961. Education may
be more widespread today but Goan women were never left in a shrouded mentality
like the rest of bharat before 61.

George Menezes' Sugar and Spice column in Goa Today. was pleasing to read.
Along with Behram Contractor (Busybee), he was a must-read guy. It was
indeed funny when he joined BJP and the party opted him on its national
executive. One didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It was long standing
joke,

Dr. Teotonio informed on Goa Research Net that George Menezes passed away.
Can anyone inform when and how. Remember he was not well and I read once
his joking how the nuns take care of him in Bandra, where he had moved to
from, I believe, Nepean Sea Road.
