The above links should make it clear that the tradition has links with
Portugal where on 6th Jan is celebrated the coronation of 3 kings (it is
also called feast of young boys) and is celebrated with special gaiety in
the Vale do Salgueiro comemorating feast of St. Stephen. The young boys
dressed as kings distribute gifts during the whole night, but then have
right to collect money next morning from the visited houses to recover their
costs. Curiously, the young boys are permitted to smoke during two feast
days.
Possibly some Portuguese from this area took the feast to Cansaulim in the
early days of the Portuguese rule and when the Jesuits controlled the
parishes of Salcete.

Cansaulim 3 kings feast,  Mapusa Feast O L of Milagres & Hindu Devotees (see
pics)

One of the reasons one can see many Hindu devotees on the feast day up on
the Hill of Cuelim
(Three Kings Feast or O L of Remedious) on January 6th every year, is that
Hindu believes this
Saibinn is one of the 7 Hindu sisters who was converted to Catholism by
Portuguese.
