During the 2012 Goa Assembly elections Giriraj Pai Vernekar masqueraded as someone apolitical in heading that massive media blitz campaign launched by his NGO, Friends of Good Governance (FOGG) under the guise of a politically neutral voter awareness and education. It was however later revealed that the very wily operator Giriraj Pai Vernekar was for decades very active with the right wing fundamentalist Vishva Hindu Parishad.
Not surprisingly after that 2012 election and on successfully fooling the people of Goa the FOGG vanished with Giriraj Vernekar himself appointed as Special Assistant in the office of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on a hefty pay scale of a Joint Secretary where he was over all in charge of negotiating deals and kickbacks in all major contracts. Besides he also managed rather manipulated Manohar Parrikar’s Face book and Twitter accounts on social media while generating fake ID accounts, that being his area of expertise. Also appointed was Siddharth Kunkalienkar as Joint Secretary to the Chief Minister on a robust salary of Rs 70,000 a month but whose only job was to act as a dedicated collection agent for Manohar Parrikar. But in November 2014 after Manohar Parrikar moved to Delhi, after bypassing Raju Sukerkar, Siddharth Kunkalienkar was very high-handedly anointed as MLA of Panaji while Giriraj Pai Vernekar was airlifted to Delhi and appointed as Deputy Director at the Confederation of Indian Industry to look after areas of Defence and Space. This gave Manohar Parrikar his trusted and skilled hand in negotiating all those under the table mega multi crore defence deals. In 2012 while asking people to Vote for a Change and liberate Goa from misgovernance, the so called Friends of Good Governance (FOGG) through a song highlighted various issues. But every Goan belatedly realized that we landed from the frying pan into the fire. So now BJP hatao – Goa Bachao may be the only way forward to rescue a sinking Goa from the current administrative anarchy and to restore democratic values while preserving what little remains of our once beautiful and tranquil State safely for posterity.
