>From one Full Moon day to another is normally a period of 28/29 days called
a
Lunar Month. A calendar month has 30/31 days, therefore a Full Moon Day
can occur normally once in a calendar month.
However, it so happens that in current month of December '09 there are two
Full Moon days i.e. Dec 2nd and Dec 31st and the second Full Moon in

a calendar month is known as the Blue Moon which falls this year on the
New Year' Eve. In other words New Year Day 2010 begins in Blue Moon
night which is a very rare occurrence , possibly once every 19 years, hence
the expression ''once in a blue moon''
The event has no astronomical significance but astrologers may see it
differently. Another interesting fact for us in India, is that a Lunar
Eclipse
is taking place as well on this Blue Moon night i.e. 12.30 am to 01.30 am.
of January,1st,2010.
