MARGAO: The Colva gram sabha on Sunday announced the setting up of a five-member committee to convince the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat and the Tourism Minister, Mr Francisco Pacheco to expedite the process of granting a suitable land of at least 600 square meters on the beachside for setting up a ‘modern health centre’ for the village of Colva.

The sarpanch, Ms Angela Borges who chaired today’s meeting disclosed the names of those in the committee as Mr Alexandre Fernandes, Mr Jose Fernandes, Mr Jovek Cardozo, Mr Rayon Vaz and Mr Menino Fernandes. Mr Alexander Fernandes, residing on the outskirts of Colva, had set the ball rolling by meeting the NRI commissioner, Mr Eduardo Faleiro, who is also keen to set up such a health centre in Colva with some NRIs willing to fund the same. Another local, Dr Robin D’Costa had also pledged support to such a project.

It was also announced that the committee should not waste any more time in getting the government coaxed in granting the land following the fact that the political situation is quite volatile in the state. As a matter of fact, this was very much stressed at the gram sabha even though a lady gram sabha member harped on the point that 600 square meters of land would be a pittance for such a project adding further that the panchayat should think 50 years ahead for such grant projects keeping in mind the parking and other facilities.

The gram sabha also deliberated on the allotment of land for the panchayat ghar wherein the sarpanch announced that the file of this project is moving quite speedily and that the panchayat ghar would be a reality. The gram sabha was of the view that the panchayat has done well in taking follow up action regarding the resolutions and proposals adopted at the last gram sabha.

Villagers also felt that though four speed breakers have been put up on the main road leading to Margao, there is a need to put speed breakers on the interior roads since it was held that youngsters have a habit of driving or riding too fast nowadays, leading to accidents.

The question of maintaining sluice gates near the two main lakes of the village was also discussed at length wherein it was mentioned that the panchayat has not taken enough steps to maintain the sluice gates which result in destroying the paddy fields.

The gram sabha also debated on the question of release of dirty water by a star hotel in the paddy fields and occasionally the sewerage stink too is felt at this particular spot. Villagers felt that the panchayat should conduct an inspection to monitor the nuisance and punish the hotel by taking legal action,if found guilty of causing nuisance to the villagers by such acts of omission and commission.

There was also a debate on the naming of a interior road wherein a gram sabha member objected to such a proposal and accordingly the gram sabha decided to hold back in naming this interior road. So also some objections were raised regarding a house and a building that is coming up in the jurisdiction of the panchayat on the question of procedures. The gram sabha also debated on the question of a water reservoir and a power sub-station for the village.
