Mr Digambar Kamat, the Congress MLA from Margao, was today unanimously elected
as the leader of the Congress legislature party and would be the new chief
minister of the state. He would be sworn in tomorrow.Announcing the election of
Mr Kamat after marathon discussion that lasted almost 10 hours, Ms Margaret
Alva, the AICC general-secretary in charge of Goa desk, well past midnight said
that the name of Mr Kamat to head the CLP was proposed by Mr Pratapsing Rane,
the outgoing chief minister, and Mr Ravi Naik, the Goa pradesh Congress
committee president.
As the news of senior Congress leader and Margao MLA, Mr Kamat's election as
new chief minister of Goa emerged, supporters of Mr Ravi Naik gathered near the
venue of the meeting of the Congress legislative party and started raising
slogans in favour of Mr Naik and against the high command of the Congress and
Ms Alva.Mr Naik emerged from the meeting hall at 12.45 a.m. and escorted his
supporters from the venue. However, some of his supporters stayed put at the
venue and continued to shout slogans against the Congress. They also caused
damage to hotel property and also prevented the exit of Congress emissaries for
some time.

The marathon CLP meeting also saw fortunes of party leaders fluctuating
throughout the day. At one time it was "certain" that Mr Naik would be named as
the new chief minister, but the scenario changed after the meeting of Mr
Vishwajit Rane and the Dhavlikar brothers (Ramkrishna and Pandurang) with the
high command emissaries, who refused to extend their support to Mr Naik. The
central observers, who reached here in the afternoon, began meeting the party
MLAs soon after their arrival at 3.15 p.m. at the venue. They met the
newly-elected MLAs first and th eafter held the meeting with the party
candidates who were defeated in the election.

Earlier, Mr R K Dhavan and Mr Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters that the high
command emissaries were still in the process of discussing which they said
would take a long time. Earlier, they held meeting with Mr Rane at his
residence.Meanwhile, the NCP leader, Dr Wilfred de Souza told the reporters
that the ball was in the court of the Congress and that they are at the moment
looking for a leader at the alliance partner, Congress and will continue to
help them in the formation of alliance government.

The two MGP MLAs, Mr Ramakrishna Dhavalikar and Mr Deepak Dhavalikar along with
Mr Vishwajit Rane met the Governor, Mr S C Jamir, earlier in the day and
briefed him about their conditional support to the Congress. The MGP president,
Mr Pandurang Raut told The Navhind Times that the party yesterday submitted a
letter to the Governor about its unconditional support to the Congress. "The
MGP has not sent any other letter to Mr Jamir," he added.
