Similar is the case with irctc.co.in - the Indian Railway Online booking
portal, where refunds are
given after 7 days and with Online Advt booking, where refund is given after 14
days - both personal experiences,
in similar circumstances as Joegoauk i.e. not my fault.

Here in N. America, everyone pays for travel services e.g. airline tickets,
hotels, car rentals, etc with a cr
For what it is worth:
1: debiting is instantaneous. It is payment owed by you in return for the
booking.
2: crediting is not.
Similar situation: if one transfers funds from account A to account B (after
hours), funds will be debited pronto BUT they will appear in account B only on
the next bus
