Herald: There are reports doing the rounds that you are preparing the ground
to contest the Assembly polls from Sanguem.
Yuri: Yes, those reports are right. Basically, I have been touring Sanguem
since the last six months. It is really sad that the constituency lacks even
the basic amenities, including roads, illumination.
I have received good response from the people at large. Incidentally, the
Congress in Sanguem is faction ridden. I am trying to bring the warring
factions together. I am slowly getting used to the scenario.
Herald: But, why Sanguem? Has the decision anything to do with your
interests in mining in Sanguem’s hinterland.
Yuri: No, not at all. My decision has no connection with the mining
business. No doubt, I come from a family with a political background, but I
want to work from the grassroots. Sanguem offers a lot of scope for work.
The people there have been deprived of facilities. Sanguem have been
contributing to the state’s kitty, but the taluka is not getting its
rightful due.
Herald: You are a commercial pilot by profession. Why have you decided to
delve into politics instead of pursuing a career in aviation.
Yuri: I did my flying in Australia. Flying has always been my passion, but,
it’s now nearly 5-6 year since I look after father’s business. Politics has
not been new to me. I have seen politics from close quarters right from a
small kid. And, I have my father’s blood running in me.
Herald: Have your plans been blessed your father?
Yuri: Of course, I have the full blessings of my father. My father has given
me the go-ahead signal to join electoral politics and contest from Sanguem.
In fact, I have started my work in Sanguem through the SUDA and JNNRUM
schemes. With these funds, I have drawn up plans to change the face of
Sanguem town first.
Herald: In the coming polls, your dad Joaquim will seek renomination from
Cuncolim constituency in the coming polls, so will uncle Churchill from
Navelim. Your cousin sister Valanka is also claiming ticket for her in
Benaulim. Do you think the Congress leadership will agree to allot four
tickets for members of one family.
Yuri: I don’t see any reason why I should not get the Congress ticket. My
father had done a lot of sacrifice for the Congress. I have faith in the
Congress that the party will nominate me in Sanguem. Moreover, Sanguem today
is ruled by the BJP. I am not asking a ticket in a constituency represented
by the Congress. I believe in social work. I want to carry forward the good
work done by my father Joaquim and uncle Churchill.
Herald: Will you still contest the elections if denied a ticket by the
Congress.
Yuri: I am confident that I will get the Congress ticket to contest the
polls from Sanguem. I am quite sure of getting the Congress ticket.
