GOACAN to observe National Road Safety Week from 3rd Jan

GOACAN will observe the 22nd National Road Safety Week
from 3rd January to create an awareness among the Consumers
on the need for their participation to implement solutions in traffic
management and reduce road accidents in Goa.
During the Road Safety Week GOACAN alongwith the Consumer
Forums will promote the importance of setting up Road Safety &
Traffic Management Committees by the Village Panchayats and
Municipal Councils to ensure citizens participation at the grass root
level.
GOACAN will also promote the usefulness of the Traffic Warden
Scheme which ensures the participation of citizens in managing
traffic and reducing accidents at the city & village level.
In the wake of the large number of deaths of pedestrians in road
accidents in 2010 Consumer Forum volunteers will promote the
benefits of notified bus stops, bus bays, footpaths, zebra crossings,
subways, proper parking, maintainence of speedbreakers and
proper signages.
The safe transportation of hazardous substances by road will also
be highlighted by GOACAN during the Week so as to reduce the
number of accidents and avoid the subsequent disastrous
consequences.
GOACAN will pursue with the Directorate of Animal Husbandary
& Veterinary Services, Directorate of Panchayats, Directorate of
Municipal Administration and the District Magistrates to initiate a
campaign to free the roads of stray cattle. This would involve the
Village Panchayats & Municipal Councils taking steps to make
their cattle pounds effective on the one hand while identifying
the stray cattle danger zones with proper signages on the other.
GOACAN will continue to highlight the need for Comfortable,
Affordable, Safe and Effective public transport which would include
bus services provided by Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd.
and private operators so as to limit the use of personal vehicles for
commuting daily, reduce traffic congestion and road accidents.
During the week GOACAN will also highlight the special needs of
the Disabled in the context of Road Safety which includes special
signages, parking spaces, training and awareness programs.
GOACAN with the co-operation of the Consumer Welfare Clubs
(CWC) will promote the setting up Road Safety Patrols (RSP) in
High Schools, HSS and Colleges to ensure the participartion of the
student community in managing traffic and reducing accidents.
With this Road Safety Week GOACAN alongwith the Consumer
Forums and Consumer Welfare Clubs will prepare to participate in
the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety to be
launched in May 2011.
