As children when we used to play Hide-and-Seek, the designated seeker
('it' in Western terminolgy) would be referred to as as the 'den'.
I've asked around and nobody seems to know why the term 'den' is used,
and if it is a term specifically used only in the South Asian
sub-continent.

Just a wild guess. Could it mean a lion's den? Meaning that the person who
has to find the others is isolated and has to take cover behind a tree or
wall and when given the 'ready' call, has to find (hunt) the others.
