July 15, 2012 TEAM HERALD teamher...@herald-goa.com PANJIM: As a direct consequence of the South Goa Collector's order to stop the transport of iron ore, Sesa Goa has in a statement said that it will be forced to lay-off 1200 employees and shut its plants at Amona and Navelim in Bicholim. "For last one year, the supply of iron ore from Karnataka has also become scarce and very costly due to closure of all mines in Karnataka as per Supreme Court Order and stocks are getting sold in an e-auction. Now the stoppage of transport within Goa has finally sounded the death knell on Sesa's plants which are running since 1992 without stopping for a single day," the company said in a statement. According to the company, it has 800 direct and 400 contract employees who hail from the surrounding villages of Amona and Navelim in Bicholim. Trying to win sympathy from the government, the company also said that the shutting of its plants will result in a shortage of power supply to the state as the exhaust gases from the blat furnace/ metcoke plant were used to power gas-based power plants. The company in a statement claimed that its plants were being run at any cost for last 3/4 months even after incurring losses and facing continuous pressures from a supposed vested interest group. Sesa has built another furnace, metcoke ovens, sinter plant, oxygen/nitrogen plant and power plant over last 2 year at a total investment of about Rs 650 crores which incidentally is the single largest investment in a manufacturing facility in Goa in the last 4 to 5 years.
