NAVHIND TIMES of Dec 3 had this item in its report about the press conference of the Rear Admiral of Goa (caps mine).
<"..the erstwhile Portuguese Garrison which included land of DABOLIM, Major Bunder Jetty, the area at Chicalim where we presently have the Naval Armament Depot, the Mangor and Alpaqures hills and all were taken over by the Government of India (since Goa was the Union Territory then). And this entire Garrison was later handed over to Navy by the Government of India for the custody and establishment of a Naval Area.["]> The area covered by Dabolim has been officially put at nearly 1700 acres. What do all the other areas listed above add up to? Does anybody know? And while we are on the subject what exactly does the Navy use the port facilities for? Nobody seems to say anything about the Navy in mormugao or whatever (except for vague references to exercises with friendly navies 'somewhere off the coast of Goa' etc) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Goanet supports BMX, the alumni network of Britto's, St Mary's and Xavier's -- three prominent institutions in Mapusa, Goa.
