"The apex court's direction comes in the wake of a complaint filed by the
widow of Ehsan Jafri, who was burnt alive in an attack on his house. Her
plea that no FIR was registered on the basis of her complaint was accepted
by the court, though the state's lawyer claimed all complaints had been
probed by the SIT. By bringing in the chief minister himself into the ambit
of the investigations, the court has considerably widened the scope of the
SIT's inquiries. The apex court has stepped in several times to monitor the
investigation into the Gujarat riots -- it moved cases out of Gujarat, it
has reopened cases, it set up the Special Investigation Team and it has
several times severely censured subsequent Gujarat governments for actions
and inaction in the matter. As a result, investigation into the riots -- in
which almost 2000 people, mainly Muslim were massacred -- has been directly
monitored by India'shighest court. This is certainly a first."
