Monte music fest at Old Goa from February 5 to 7

PANAJI: The Monte music festival 2010 organized by Fundacao Oriente and Cidade de Goa will be held at the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount, Old Goa, from February 5 to 7.

The festival presents Indian and western classical music in the old heritage chapel with the Chorao and Divar islands in the backdrop.

Performances will be in the chapel and in the courtyard. According to organisers, the inaugural concerts will be a guitar and sitar fusion at sunset in the courtyard by Manuel Leao (guitar) and Ustad Chhote Rahimat Khan (sitar) followed by a violin and piano recital by Pheroze Mistri and Delia Varga inside the chapel.

February 6 will feature Kuchipudi danseuse and cultural activist Shallu Jindal, the Sta. Cecilia choir of the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol with 16 members and 14 ensemble players and 15 guest singers led by Fr Romeo Monteiro. The evening will end with a performance by the Rodrigo Leao Quintet from Portugal.

The concluding day will feature a 'tabla tarang' by Amit Bhonsle with 10 tablas, a vocal recital by mezzo-soprano Viola da Cunha accompanied by Alan Peach on the piano. The festival will end with a performance by the Goa State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pheroze Mistri.

All performances organized in the chapel will require passes, which can be collected from Fundacao Oriente during office hours from February 1. The organisers will provide a shuttle service to the venue from Gandhi circle, Old Goa, in order to prevent traffic congestion during the festival.
