Thanks FN, I think 4 anattim make a Poll (and not 16) Neighbours used to borrow from us ‘poll bhor tandull’ We did not have any paddy fields. One anattem is roughly the size of Milk Maid (Condensed Milk) tin. The milk tin was widely used as an unit of measurement ‘anattem’ Paili is a wooden round unit – see pic. Wedding Cakes, until early 80’s were of 4-5 round layers. In the order of Ex-Large (bottom layer) , large, medium and small (top) (On top, they used to keep a big baby doll (sitted). The bottom layer was always the fake layer made up of wooden round paili. All the layers (placed on each other w/o stands) were decorated with white paper (Noketra foli). The bridal couple, often seen cutting the cake (poking their knife) into the lowest layer only to find it was hard wood, then they will go in for second layer which was the cake so also the third and the foruth. Poll is still used by Festache Chonnekars and Tisriokars (Grams & clams) Check tisrio/poll here http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk2/84916354/ See chonne/poll – Calvim Saligao, chinchinim http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk18/3496703293/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukchurches/3756940665/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk1/2861403223/ Kullov is something like a square or rectangular wooden box- see pic Paili (Staked) -weights and liq. FN ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: sebastian mascarenhas <masky28 at rediffmail.com> To: fn at goa-india.org Dear Fredrick, Khandi was the measure used for paddy, as I remeber 4 ozim ( Baskets) was equal to one khandi. 1 ozem was 4 panti, then there was 1 kudov which was 2 pailis, one paili was 4 poddi, one poddi was 16 anatim.(all salcete Cinchinim, Sarzora lingo) The fields were measured as LANCE , then there was 1/2 lance . 1/4 lance 1/8 lance etc, I think our form 1 & 14 shows the area of a lance in square meters. joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa & NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc Keep up with people you care about with Yahoo!
