Who got the ‘mota maal’?Thursday, April 30, 2015By Aroosa AhmedEach of the
3,000 waste bins which the BMC has bought cost `22,290; actual market rate of a
bin is `6,500!
A Right to Information (RTI) plea reveals that Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC) has wasted money in installing waste bins across Mumbai.
The application, filed by an RTI activist Mansoor Umer Darvesh, reveals that
BMC has purchased a rectangular pole mounted S.S litter bin for Rs. 22,290
(including labour charges) whereas ADC confirmed that its actual market value
is only Rs. 6,500. Has the differences in the price ie Rs.15,790 been spent
only in its installation?

Further the RTI questioned the amount of rupees spent by BMC on each bins to
fix it on footpath (labour charged), in reply the Executive Engineer (SWM) Zone
VI Public Information Officer has stated that the rectangular pole mounted S.S
litter bin has cost Rs. 22,290, the circular pole mounted S.S litter bin is Rs
13,715, F.R.P pole mounted litter bin is Rs 6440 and the M.S. Pole mounted
litter bin is Rs. 5700. The litter bins were purchased from Mak Environtech &
Solutions Pvt Limited and Hindustan Engineering Corporation located in Mulund
and Andheri.

An Official from the Hindustan Engineering Corporation on the basis of
anonymity informed the ADC, that the 80 litre rectangular pole mounted S.S.
Litter bin would cost Rs.6,500, “In regard to the 80 litre rectangular bins
which have been installed by the government, each bin costs Rs. 6,500.”

Speaking to the ADC, Mansoor Umer Darvesh, RTI activist, said, “I saw the bins
at the road and found it fascinating that steel bins have been installed on the
road, I was in doubt that drunkards would remove the bins and sell them. I
decided to discover more about the bins, however when I saw the price of the
bins I was shocked, the BMC is spending our money in this manner where a bin is
costing Rs. 22,290, a good quality bin would not cost more than Rs. 5,000.
People should realise that this is where the money they paid as taxes is going,
people should come forward and protest against the officials.”
