One story has it that the bus he was travelling in from Goa to Bombay halted and he wandered off and startled a local woman whose husband thinking she had been assaulted, gathered a few men and beat and killed Bennett. Another story is that Bennett was being threatened and subject to extortion by unnamed people in Goa and he was fleeing them by travelling in the bus from Goa to Bombay and they arranged to kill him for unknown reasons.
