PANAJI — All professional football clubs in India, including the top six
Goans — Dempo, Churchill, Sporting, Vasco, Salgaocar and Sesa — affiliated to
All India Football Federation (AIFF), will have to be registered, henceforth,
as legal-cum-commercial entities, following the AFC recommendations on club
licencing regulations.
The AFC has also suggested that the I-League should be run by a new company
which will have equity from the AIFF and the participating clubs.
Following the recommendations of the AFC Pro-League ad-hoc committee, the
AIFF is expected to set up a separate private limited company to run the Indian
League from next season onwards and increase the crowd attendance in order to
enhance the chances of Indian clubs’ participation in next year’s AFC Champions
League.
A similar arrangement is in place in Europe.
The six Goan clubs are working overtime to meet the deadline for implementing
club licencing regulations by October 1, 2008 as some are registered under the
Registration of Societies Act while others are part of the main group of
companies.
The AFC has made it clear that if the Pro Clubs do not change their status,
then no Indian club will be eligible to participate in the lucrative AFC
Champions League.
The two-member inspection team of the AFC Pro-League ad-hoc committee, led by
its deputy chairman, Mr Tokuaki Suzuki, had recently visited India and
recommended that clubs be managed as commercial entities.
The AFC has also made it mandatory that all Pro Clubs should have coaches
with ‘A Licence’ from AFC. Since there are some Pro Club teams with coaches who
do not posses the licence, the AIFF will be conducting the course during the
middle of this year and those who are coaching the I-League and Second Division
National Fooball League teams would be given preference to attend the course.
