Hi At the outset I wish to express my unconditional support to all those supporting the cause of Freedom of Expression in all its varied forms. Still I would like to say a few things that many may argue go against my primary assertion -- unconditional support.
Aniruddha Sen Gupta and Kalidas Sawkar are absolutely right on their respective views in my opinion. I am sure I have an opinion for the cause of Freedom of Expression which could be a part of the petition. What I am not sure is whether I can count myself as a distinguished personality. Because Sandeep suggests that "opinions from distinguished personalities" can be attached to the said Petition. I would also love to be a member of the delegation but I feel it is the privilege of only those living in and around Panjim. I don't understand why Sandeep should limit something that needs extensive support from every nook and corner of Goa and beyond. I particularly understand freedom of expression because I have been on the receiving end of the same on various occasions as a humble proof reader with GT. First a women's collective came for my throat and later I got life-threatening calls and even direct threats from their goons following a full page write up (GT Sept 24, 1996) on the environment-devastating Penguin Alcohol in Canacona. Penguin Alcohol later even filed a case against GT and editor for the same. GT (truth) won. What I also understand is the fact that there are three types of people -- 1. those out to make money while it is night. 2. those out to get fame and be left alone (IMHO) like Dr Rebello and a few others. 3. those who prefer to be in the limelight forever even if it is very taxing. The simple truth of the matter (IMNSHO) is that for a tiny state like Goa one well meaning NGO can take care of all the ailments that plague Goa and its people. Without prejudice to Sandeep and Co, I wish us all the success on this count and may we remain united to fight many battles to savour many more victories. Writer Aniruddha Sen Gupta suggested that we go to the CM with a delegation and take some kind of a firm assurance from him supporting the cause of Freedom of Expression. Kalidas Sawkar also suggested that we need to do something beyond the regular letters, lest the whole movement not fizzle out and we be back to square one. I suggest that along with the Petition, we can compile views and opinions from distinguished personalities and Legal positions with Court Judgments, which we can attach to the said Petition. I shall try to work along these lines in the next couple of days. Those living in an around Panjim could be a part of the delegation. Necessary Press notes can be issued thereafter. regards Sandeep
