The art competition, a first-of-its- kind art event held simultaneously in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Africa, Macau, Portugal, Brazil, Pakistan and India was an effort to assimilate and create awareness for young global Goans towards environment and cultural preservation of Goa. The art competitions were held and coordinated in each country by Goan Associations on the theme: Environment and Culture Preservation of Goa. Launching the competition in Goa in August, the competition received 45 entries from all over Goa. Says Ethel Da Costa, organizer and global co-ordinator of the competition, "The art competition was a platform for young Goan artists to encourage free-style interpretation of the theme in mixed media formats. We were greatly surprised and encouraged by the enthusiasm and response of parents to have their children compete here. Some of the young participants from Margao, Saligao, Vasco, Panjim, Calangute have displayed so much talent, creativity and understanding of issues threatening Goa's natural and cultural ethos, that we could all learn lessons from them." A panel of eminent judges comprising artists Harshada Kerkar, Deviprasad Rao and art critic Swatee Nair judged the entries after long deliberations. Four young winners stood apart for their creativity, application of thought to the theme and artistic aesthetics. Winners of the Global Goan Children Art Competition 2007 are: 10-year-old Siddharth Kerkar (1st Prize) from Lourdes Convent High School, Saligao; 10-year-old Tejan N Karmali (2nd Prize) from M&N English H School, Comba-Margao; 7-year-old Girija SS Dempo (3 rd Prize) from Sharada Mandir School, Miramar; and 7-year-old Shrinjan Ghosh (3rd Prize) also from Sharada Mandir School, Miramar. Felicitating winners on the occasion as Chief Guest, Shri Pratapsing Rane commended the vision of the young artists in understanding the cultural and environmental heritage of Goa, while appreciating art platforms for the display of their creativity and growth of their talent. "We look forward to seeing them bloom into upcoming artists of Goa," he concluded. An exhibition of all entries will be on display at the Gallery Attic till Oct 13.
