Augusto Pinto *A FESTIVAL OF GANDHIAN IDEAS.* *REDISCOVERING THE MAHATMA.* Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2nd to mark the birth anniversary of The Father of our Nation. Over the years, very unfortunately, this commemoration has deteriorated into an empty ritual. The Chief Ministers of the States garland a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, (which is washed just once a year in preparation for the official garlanding). The Police, the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides dutifully present a “march past” at which some Minister or the other “takes the salute”. The entire programme has become a meaningless ritual which has lost all its enthusiasm. Everybody (and specially the politicians) participates only because not to do so will signify an absence of loyalty to the Mahatma. As a departure from this meaningless ritual of the past years, and in order to help our citizens – and our nation – to rediscover the intellectual eminence and the moral richness of the Father of our Nation, the Council for Social Justice and Peace of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman in collaboration with Peaceful Society, Goa, is organizing a Festival of Gandhian Ideas throughout the month of October 2013 to commemorate the greatest Statesman of this Millennium and to draw attention to his views on a variety of important subjects which are of critical importance for the welfare of our State and of our Nation at this crucial juncture in our history. The commemoration-cum-celebration of Gandhiji’s birth will span the entire month of October, 2013 which will thus be dedicated to him, and during which the citizens will have the opportunity to “rediscover” the richness and the relevance of his teachings on matters which are of vital importance to this State and to this Nation of ours. There will be a series of public lectures by eminent persons who are deeply involved in the study of Gandhiji’s views. The lectures will cover Gandhiji’s ideas on the following subjects: - Gandhiji’s fundamental commitment to Truth : Satyagraha. - Gandhiji’s views on education. - Gandhiji’s views on the conduct of business, trade and commerce. - Gandhiji’s views on morality in public life. - Gandhiji’s desire to bring about real democracy through Panchayati Raj. *Lecture 1.
