International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Great going, GEC team... Prachi, a small correction. We haven't taken the stall there, but have approached CSI to allot us the Rampon Hall (on the first floor), to arrange a series of talks, 3-7 pm on both days. Please encourage other students to put on talks too. We need both geek talks and newbie-focussed ones! FN ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Prachi Amonkar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: 31 Aug 2007 19:54 Subject: [ILUG-GEC] Report of last meeting To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi everyone, We basically did two things in last meeting - OpenSUSE 10.2 DVD installation and demonstration of XGL/Compiz effects in Ubuntu 7.04. One VERY good news is that now we have shiny new PCs to work with, making it possible to demonstrate DVD distros and high-end graphics effects. OpenSUSE 10.2 installation was covered in detail. We covered both methods of installation i.e. 1. Letting OpenSUSE propose the partitions 2. Taking things in your hands by doing custom partitioning from scratch. Concepts of mount point, primary partition and extended partition were explained to newbies. We also made sure to cover points like resizing of existing windows partitions, automounting windows partitions, and configuring boot loader settings to make the newbie transition from windows to linux is a smooth one. A brief introduction to the concept of packages was provided. As engineering students, we made sure to select development packages required for programming. (They are not selected by default.) The demonstration of XGL/Compiz effects in Ubuntu 7.04 was the fun part. Most newbies were extremely impressed with spinning 3d cubes and wobbly windows. In case you couldn't attend the meeting and want to have a taste of what you missed out on, you can see some screenshots at http://news.softpedia.com/news/What-Should-You-Expect-from-Ubuntu-7-04-50206.shtml. Desktop effects are said to be experimental in Ubuntu 7.04, yet we found them to be extremely stable during our demonstration. The meeting ended with an announcement about ECAP, the computer exhibition organized by Computer Society of India. The venue is Hotel Mandovi, Panjim, Goa. Date: 8 and 9 Sept. ILUG-Goa i.e Indian Linux Users Group - Goa will be having a stall there. On both days (Saturday and Sunday), there will be talks on various linux related topics. I'll be giving a small talk on how to get newbie programmers started in linux. Assuming that the audience knows basic C programming (Hello World) using windows, I'll show how to compile and run the same program on linux. Anyone from GEC interested in giving talks can contact me or post a message on this group. Hoping to see y'all at the next meeting, - Prachi Amonkar Yahoo!
